We can’t deny the fact that toys are different now than back in our own day.

As Christmas is fast approaching, we find ourselves reminiscing about the kind of presents we got back then.

We often wished for the latest toys that are now extinct.

But many are still around today.

Yes, kids nowadays want season passes for Fortnite, or computer peripherals because everyone is playing video games now.

So how different were things then?

How many toys can you actually remember?

First off, we’ll go to the toy that pushed our artistic limits.

You have one knob going left to right, and one knob going up and down.

The challenge for you is to draw the image with just those two sets of strokes and in one continuous line.

Yes! It’s Etch A Sketch!

This mechanical drawing toy was invented in France and was first manufactured by the Ohio Art Company.

It’s made of a thick, flat gray screen with a moving stylus underneath that etches through aluminum powder.

Can you remember the best drawing you’ve seen on one of these? Some were astoundingly intricate.

Then there’s the oddly iconic

Toys that we never imagined would, nor understand how they became iconic.

Fisher-Price is one of the biggest toy makers in the world, specializing in toddler toys.

And if you were a toddler in the 60s, you’d be pulling one of these bad boys.

The Chatter Telephone

Chatter Telephones can be quite a stimuli source for kids back then.

You get to pull the string and the phone comes to life with chattering and eye-rolling.

As simple as it seems, it achieved icon status.

It even ended up on Toy Story.

Then there’s the American Icon through and through.

If boys back then were not allowed to play with dolls, what kind of toys did their parents give them? Well, it comes with a G, an I, and a Joe.

America’s movable fighting man became such a hit that marketers had to come up with a new term for it, “Action figures”.

These dolls also became widely used intellectual property resulting in movies, cartoon series, and video games.

What about that one toy?

The one that made us realize how inflexible we are?

You know what we’re talking about.

Spin the arrow to know which part of the body you’ll need to place on a specific color?

Twister is a worldwide phenomenon.

Maybe the charm isn’t in the skill requirement, but how it brings together every age group.

Lastly, we had a glimpse of the future.

What if you can use your TV to play a game? What if you can bring the arcade into your bedroom?

The Atari is one of the first consoles that inadvertently heralded the era of video gaming.

While its success was short-lived, it provided an opportunity for engineers to dream bigger and create better.

Without Atari, we would never experience playing Xbox or Play Station 5. It was truly one of the toys that brought us to where we are now.
