Pets have become an important piece of the puzzle when we think about our household. They are there when we are lonely and need company, or they can act all goofy and give us some laughs from time to time.

When times get tough and we need some support, our pets are also our best friends and give us comfort when we need it the most.

But what happens when a pet is at the right place and the right time for one of the most crucial life-threatening events one can go through? Many good times in life are taken for granted, however, it’s important to realize that misfortune can strike at a moment’s notice.

That’s exactly what happened to a family in Marcellus, Michigan when a sudden twist of fate occurred. Patricia Drauch was with her 14 month-toddler and was tending to her garden. She needed to reach for a specific tool located in the garage and so went to quickly grab it when things flipped a switch.

Patricia came back and noticed her toddler was completely gone!

The scared mother franticly looked through every corner and space imaginable as her baby was nowhere in sight. Fuming with desperation and anxiety, Patricia realized that her son might have wandered toward the pool.

Fearing the worst, she immediately rushed outside only to scream in horror at the sight of her toddler partially submerged in the water. His eyes were rolled back and his lips were blue from suffocation.

Fortunately for the toddler, there was one member of the family who was willing to risk it all to save his human counterpart: Bear the Labrador.

Patricia noticed that Stanley’s body was “floating” and understood that the doggo was keeping him above water.

The toddler’s body was just above the water where Bear kept it so that he wouldn’t drown with water in his lungs.

The brave dog did his best to balance Stanley on his back and didn’t move an inch until Patricia came to pick them up.

“He wouldn’t move in the pool. He didn’t bark. It was like he was afraid to move at all.”

Patricia dialed 9-11 and after not getting any signal, she decided to pack up her boys and rush immediately to the fire station.

On the car ride, the worried mom went a bit over the speed limit and noticed her son was coughing out some excess water from the pool. He was at least being responsive and she knew she had to be quick.

After arriving, the X-rays showed there was no water in Stanley’s lungs and thus no major damage was inflicted.

The family is extremely grateful for Bear’s heroics in keeping the toddler alive. If it wasn’t for his instincts, Patricia would have been looking at a totally different outcome.

“I’ve always told him since he was 4 weeks old that these are your babies…so it paid off teaching him,” said Patricia about Bear.

This heart-racing moment is not one to take lightly.

For all the moms with toddlers out there, just a friendly reminder to always keep a third eye on your young ones. They are highly curious and daring to explore and try the world they’ve yet to fully understand. Lucky for Patricia, she had a guardian angel in Bear at her side that prevented a giant catastrophe from happening.

The family did in fact state that they would put up construction fencing that same night in order to prevent any future incidents such as these. They wanted to make sure that their home is hazard-proof and safe for their children to not have to worry.
