Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The United Nations estimates an approximate population of 38 million people. It covers an area of around 5,200 square miles which puts about 7,300 people per square mile.
With so many people, Tokyo has resorted to high sky rises and tiny living spaces to accommodate for the dense population.
An Australian woman named Emma is living the good life in an 82 square foot apartment in Tokyo.
To many of us in the United States and other western cultures, we might find this astonishing. How could anyone possibly live comfortably in such a tight space? Well — you might be surprised.
With the help of some clever design elements and some efficient architecture, Emma’s tiny studio is impressively livable and functional.
The apartment is narrow, Emma can touch both walls at the same time — but the super tall ceilings give a feeling of space.
There are windows at one end of the apartment, opening the space up even further. There’s even a tiny balcony to open and bring in the fresh air.
Cooking might be an issue in this super tiny kitchen — there certainly won’t be any feasts prepared. However, for USD 600 a month, this is quite the steal in the massive metropolis of Tokyo.
The kitchen has a sink, one single cooking element, and a mini fridge. She has to get creative with prep space, keeping her meals very simple.
Believe it or not — there is a bathroom in this tiny space, and the design is ingenious. The sink swivels to go over the toilet. The entire bathroom serves as a shower while the sink protects things like toiletries and toilet paper from getting wet.
Then there’s the sleeping space. Emma climbs up a ladder to a small and cozy sleeping loft which is one of her favorite spots.
“What animal sleeps out in the open? I feel that animals always go to a cave or they just try to get into a corner or something… I think a lot of humans like to feel like they are in a tight, nice, cozy space”.
Her day-to-day life can be viewed on her YouTube channel, but you can see her adorable Tokyo micro-home in the tour below.
