Teens Vow To Give Homecoming Crown To Bullied Friend

March 11th, 2019

Once upon a time, mean girls were looked up to and held power over their peers.

But thanks to young women like Anahi Alvarez and Naomi Martinez, mean girls just aren’t cool anymore.

Showing kindness and love to your peers is what’s cool these days.

Anahi, Naomi, and their classmate Lillian Skinner were invited on The Ellen Show for the act of compassion they showed Lillian.

This act occurred when the girls were all seniors at Grand Prairie High School in North Texas.

Some mean girls in their school hatched a mean girl prank to make Lillian think that she was nominated for homecoming court along with her friends Anahi and Naomi.

Anahi and Naomi, who’ve been friends with Lillian since the seventh grade, eventually heard about the plan.

They decided that they would make up for it with a selfless act.

They vowed that if either of them were nominated as homecoming queen they would pass the crown on to Lillian. And being homecoming queen in Texas is a big deal, so what they were doing was extremely kind and selfless.

“We promised each other and we were like, ‘No matter what, no backing down. If one of us wins, we’re giving Lillian the crown,'” Naomi told NBCDFW 5.

Lillian’s friends described her as “an amazing girl” and “one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

“She’s so sweet,” Anahi said. “We need people in this world like Lilly.”

Lillian says her sweetness comes from something that her mom has always told her.

“My mom tells me, and I remember to tell my friends, ‘Look inside [to see what] counts. Not the outside. Look inside your heart,'” she said. “If you judge people’s skin, that’s bad. But look inside their heart, to who they are.”

Anahi ended up being that year’s homecoming queen. The girls told their principal about their plan and he helped them execute it.

They told Lillian that she was being brought out onto the field so she could take pictures of the homecoming court procession.

After Anahi was announced as homecoming queen the principal announced that she would instead honor “a very hardworking senior” instead.

That’s when Anahi walked over to Lillian and placed the crown her head.

When Lillian recalls the moment, her whole face lights up and she is filled with joy.

“She pulled me over and she put the crown on my head. I was like, wow, really,” Lillian said. “Like it’s a dream or something?”

“Seeing the look on her face and the way she reacted toward it, it was priceless,” said Naomi. “I knew it was the right decision.”

Anahi says that when someone asks her if she was homecoming queen, she says no. She tells them that Lillian was and she just ran in her place.

The whole world took note of Anahi and Naomi’s act of kindness as their story went viral.

Ellen DeGeneres was so moved by the story that she invited all three girls on her show.

Ellen decided to name all three of them homecoming queens on her show. She even placed them on the famous Ellen wall where pictures of all of Ellen’s favorite guests are posted. Most of the photos feature big celebrities and prominent people like President Barak Obama. Ellen also gave the girls a gift of $10,000 each from Shutterfly.
