He chose to cover one of the hardest R&B songs for his blind Voice audition.
Charly Luske is totally handsome, exudes confidence, and has an effervescent charm that immediately comes across the TV screen. It’s certainly easy to see how all the ladies would immediately fall for this good-looking singer!
But of course, the judges on The Voice Holland couldn’t see Charly with their backs turned to him. So he’d have to convince them some other way that he was the right man to do justice to soul to James Brown’s “It’s a man’s man’s man’s world?”
He had all of them facing him in 10 seconds flat.
Charly was singing “blind” for his audition on The Voice Holland, and the only thing that mattered to the judges, at least for this first round, was just how good or bad his crooning sounded.
He could have potentially been hammering the nails in his own coffin by choosing to cover the James Brown Classic.
The song is an often-botched cover that not many “mans” in this world can pull off with any real clout.
It’s not that the song itself is hard to sing – the vocal range is actually pretty easy to reach. It’s just that not many people are hardwired for the slow, simmering grooves that are at the heart of R&B soul!
This Dutchman had absolutely nothing to worry about.
As soon as he hit the stage, Charly grabbed the mic, smiled at the audience, and crooned five of the most famous words in R&B music history, all while sporting a James Brown-like grimace!
Usually the camera has time to get a closeup of the judges expressions as they listen to the contestant sing. But in this case, it all moved so fast all anyone could see was a flurry of chairs spin around to face their new favorite singer.
“This is a man’s world…”
The classic 1966 tune is one of the reasons why James Brown earned the nickname “Godfather of Soul.” But now it’s helping Charly turn into a new legend of rhythm and blues.
Even his family was stunned at the unanimous response from the judges!
His wife, who was waiting backstage, is heard letting out a very stunned “oh” at the unexpected swiftness of the judge’s decisions, while his son covers his mouth in surprise.
However, with a brilliant voice like his, it’s not really all that surprising that Charly was able to capture the judges’ attention within seconds of opening his mouth.
One right after the other, the chairs lit up with “I want you” and one of the judges even had his hand raised up high in the air.
Even with their chairs facing forward, the judges couldn’t get enough.
The male judge on the end started wildly punching the magic red button on his console, as if to confirm that, yes, he absolutely made the right decision. Another judge gave Charly a standing ovation before he was even halfway through his performance, while a third was mesmerized by his voice.
Although the lyrics are a little bit outdated for our modern climate, there’s no doubt that Charly is very much a soulful man when he belts out “It’s a man’s man’s man’s world.”
