Jack Kane and Emma Clarke had been together for 3 years when Jack started experiencing a few odd symptoms. Intense back pains, pins and needles, and hypersensitivity in his legs became a common theme, and the 23-year-old visited countless doctors in search of an explanation.

The doctors diagnosed him with many different things, including a trapped nerve and mental illness, but throughout it all, Jack just continued to deteriorate.

After Jack woke up one day, completely unable to walk, the doctors found a tumor in his spine and diagnosed him with cancer. They told him he may only have “weeks to live”.

Soon after receiving the terrible news, Kane asked the hospital nurses to lift him out of his wheelchair, so he could get down on one knee and propose to Emma before it was too late. Emma ultimately said ‘yes’, and a hospital wedding was scheduled for 8 days later.

Jack explained, “I was always going to marry her— we’ve known each other for nearly ten years and have been together for the last three. From the day I first met her, I knew I wanted to be with her. So, I got my mom to get the ring, and the nurses put me down on one knee to propose. We were married 8 days later. Why waste any time?”

Prior to the day of the wedding, Jack was scheduled to have a spinal biopsy. During this appointment, doctors told him the tumor had shrunk, and they no longer believed he had cancer. Instead of letting everyone know, however, the couple decided to go ahead with the wedding and to surprise their guests with the wonderful news.

Emma described the moment to The Sun UK, saying, “As long as I live, I will never forget the atmosphere in the room when Jack said ‘I’m not terminal’. You could hear a pin drop. Everyone looked like they were taking seconds to register what was going on, then the room erupted into cheers and crying.”

She continues, “The love, support and strength we’ve received from family, friends, and people who just heard we were getting married has been absolutely overwhelming. We really can’t thank everyone who has been there for us and also helped to make our day so amazing.”

Doctors now believe that Jack may be suffering from neuromyelitis optica, more commonly known as Devic’s disease. According to Cleveland Clinic, it is an immunological disorder that may be confused with MS and is characterized by immune attacks on the optic nerve and spinal cord.

Jack is currently receiving hospital treatments for his condition, but the couple remains optimistic about the future.

He has said, “My legs may never come back, but there are people worse off than me. I won’t be beaten by something I can’t see.”

Emma has also stated, “No one asks to be in this position— what we’ve gone through these last few weeks people don’t go through in a lifetime— but we stay strong for each other.”
