The Grand Nationals Dance Championships is a major annual event, bringing together the best dancers across the U.S. to showcase their talent.
While it’s a competitive stage, the Championships also foster a supportive community where dancers are encouraged to share their passion and skills.
Several years back, one of the standout performances came from a young pair, Mack West and Trinity Davis, who ultimately took home the title of Grand Nationals champions.
Mack and Trinity are experts in a dance style known as the shag, a classic that is particularly popular along the coastlines of North and South Carolina.
The shag is traditionally led by the male dancer and is known for its playful and energetic steps, giving each couple the freedom to interpret the moves creatively.
While it might appear straightforward, shag dancing actually requires skill, coordination, and practice.
Although the exact origins of the shag remain somewhat mysterious, we do know that the “modern shag” style really took off during the 1940s and 1950s.
Back then, it was all the rage among young people who flocked to the bars and beaches.
Fast forward, Mack and Trinity—though still in their mid-teens—revived this lively tradition with remarkable grace and flair at the Grand Nationals.
Their performance was set to Kelley Hunt’s “Queen of the 88’s,” a track that complements the era they aimed to represent.
The pair also put thought into their vintage-inspired outfits.
Trinity donned a bright yellow jumpsuit, while Mack sported a v-neck sweater vest, giving him an endearing “mini-grandpa” look.
With huge smiles lighting up their faces, it was clear they were ready to put on a memorable show.
As the piano music began, Mack and Trinity started moving with a side-to-side two-step and quick twists, setting a lively tone right from the start.
Mack quickly took the spotlight, showing off his fancy footwork and reminding everyone that impressive moves in dance aren’t reserved just for the women.
His nimble steps made it seem like he had springs in his legs, leaving audience members wide-eyed in amazement.
Watching Mack, it’s easy to think his movements are effortless, but his fluidity and speed make it clear that he’s put in countless hours of practice.
Mastering such precision and control over each step isn’t something that happens overnight.
While he makes it look like a breeze, his smooth footwork is the result of dedication and skill.
Throughout the routine, Mack and Trinity danced in perfect harmony, swinging, spinning, and dipping with impressive coordination.
Their chemistry as dance partners added to the performance, and it was evident that they were genuinely enjoying themselves.
The dance was full of dizzying moves that many would struggle to keep up with, let alone execute so gracefully.
Their Grand Nationals routine was captured on video and quickly gained attention on YouTube.
The clip racked up more than 400,000 views, earning praise from viewers.
One fan commented, “I have watched these two dance (and win), and I must say that it’s a great pleasure to see them dance again. Both are naturals and light on their feet. Well done kiddos, and belated congratulations 👍👍.”
It’s no wonder that Mack and Trinity clinched first place, beating out their competitors with their skill, charm, and infectious joy!
