What exactly is shag dancing?

n this video, The Junior Shag Dance Team is performing the Carolina shag, a partner dance done primarily to beach music. By the name, you can tell it originated in the Carolinas of the United States and is still very popular in the south.

The Junior Shag Dance Team is a group of young Carolina shag dancers ages 14-20 from all over the south. Their goals are to “spread the dance they love to the world in hopes of keeping Carolina shag, and it’s deep-rooted traditions alive” and to “boogie down!”

When these kids start their performance, they take shag dancing to a whole other level.

The Junior Shag Dance Team gets introduced by the judge, and they walk out onto the stage, looking confident, rightfully so. They start to the song “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations, and all twelve of them are ideally in sync.

The group makes up of six boys and six girls because, in shag dancing, they do pair up. However, in the beginning, they stay in a triangular formation dancing perfectly together, mainly just with their feet.

Then the formation breaks; they go into position and continue the rest of the flawless performance.

Two of each pairing shimmies away from the original triangular formation and start to dance in a circle. This causes them to cause another sort of triangular formation, and you can tell these guys had a lot of practice.

They eventually dance themselves into a line formation, and the whole routine looks so smooth. As they begin this transition, the song also transitions to “Think” by Aretha Franklin, and their dance moves match perfectly with the change of the song.

With the six pairs in the line formation, their dance moves are still impeccably in sync.

Their footwork is impressive and looks very difficult; the Junior Shag Dance Team shows their shag skills off. The line formation breaks off to the six pairings, and although they are separated into pairings, the whole group is still entirely in sync.

The parings spin, kick and dip all together with not a single person out of sync. There is even one moment they all look at the camera at the same time, and that has to be hard to pull off. The pairings start to come back together in two separate groups, and they pull off an impressive dance move where the boys jump through the girl’s arms!

Moving on to the final song and every moment of this performance is breathtaking.

They end the dance routine with “Midnight Special” by Little Richard, which with every whoo they look perfectly in sync with each other and the music. These shag dancers are showing why everyone should love shag dancing as well; this performance is incredible!
