Most parents will probably tell you that teenage girls are not to be messed with.
But a Massachusetts intruder learned this the hard way.
Avery Cormier a 17-year-old from Middleborough, Massachusetts is being praised for her serious badassery after she chased off an intruder at knifepoint.
Cormier was at home with her younger sister when she heard someone breaking in.
The first thing she did was call 911.
The second thing she did was grab two steak knives. Cormier was not playing.
“Somebody just tried to break into my house,” Avery Cormier told the 911 operator. “I’m home alone.”
Cormier’s mom had left for work and her younger sister was asleep when the intruder broke in at 7:30 a.m. Cormier didn’t run, and she didn’t hide. She instead went after the intruder brandishing her knives.
“I was screaming at the top of my lungs to get out of my house get out,” she said.
Cormier said the ordeal was “very scary” and acknowledged that her actions were “irrational.”
“It worked out. That’s all that matters,” she said.
Not only did Cormier show extreme bravery, but she also exhibited clever thinking. While she frightened Ridge and sent him running, she took a video of his car to catch his license place.
“I got him out of the house. I scared him,” the girl told a 911 dispatcher in audio released by police. “I took a video of his truck leaving so I have his license plate number.”
Police ended up arresting 58-year-old Joseph Ridge as a suspect. Police referred to Ridge as a “career criminal” who just finished a stint in the slammer for a robbery conviction.
“The suspect in this case is a career criminal who was arrested after terrorizing a 14-year-old girl in her own home,” Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins told CBS News. “Hopefully his arrest this time will bring this known felon to account for his crimes.”
They also said he had been previously arraigned more than 130 times and has a “history of violence.” Ridge, who isn’t believed to have any connection to the Cormier’s family, was charged with aggravated breaking and entering during the day, trespassing and disorderly conduct.
“I really didn’t realize that she had it in her to stay so calm under fire,” Cormier’s mom Dianne Tautkus told CBS News. “Grabbed two kitchen steak knives and she went back and stood outside the door and started screaming at him ‘Get out of my house. Get out of my house.'”
Cormier, who is an honor roll student, just happened to be home that day because it was Good Friday.
The local police department commended her for her courageous act and quick thinking.
“I would like to commend the courageous actions of this girl. Even in the midst of an extremely scary event, her bravery assisted us in identifying the man believed to be responsible for breaking into her home,” said Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins.
