While out in public, not everyone is good about keeping an eye on whatโ€™s going on around them.

A lot of times, a person might focus on their cell phone if theyโ€™re waiting for a bus or a plane.

This is completely normal, as itโ€™s not polite to stare at strangers.

However, there might be times when being alert could help save a life.

Malyk told CBC News:

โ€œThe guy was screaming at her, the girl. He wasnโ€™t really gentle with her, and I started watching, because I thought he would hit her, so I approached them a little bit.โ€

At that point, they asked the teen for money so they could catch a bus.

Sensing there was something wrong, he said yes and went with them to get money out at the local convenient store.

When he finally got the woman alone for a brief moment he realized his intuition was right.

She told him she needed help to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend, who was holding her captive.

So how could the teenager get her away from her violent kidnapper?

Youโ€™ll never guess how he did it.

Malyk found himself in a nerve-racking position when the woman told him she was being held against her own will.

He also noticed that the violence escalated when they werenโ€™t in public places, so he tried to keep them out in the open.

The teenager followed them, playing the role of the nice guy, just waiting for an opportunity to act.

He got on the bus with the woman and her captor, still, waiting for the right moment.

โ€œMy plan was to keep them in a public place, where thereโ€™s a lot of people. I decided to make myself friendly with the man, so he would trust me. So I played my game,โ€ The teen told CBC News.

Inside the restaurant, Malyk quickly excused himself to the bathroom and called the police for the terrified woman.

They showed up to arrest the man and her ordeal was finally over.
