Pit bulls are one of those breeds of dogs that always get a bad rep. Most of the time they’re harmless, but when we hear of horrendous pit bull attacks the blame usually falls on the owners for encouraging violent behavior. The only real way to find out what a specific pup’s temperament is like is by asking the dog’s owner, or by simply putting yourself in the dog’s vicinity and seeing what happens.

Sadly, sometimes things go wrong.

That is exactly the situation 6-year-old Mason Lindeman found himself in recently when he was approached by a pit bull while he was outside playing. The whole incident was caught on video by the security camera at his house, and we’re warning you now, the footage is not for the faint of heart.

In the video, three young kids can be seen having fun in the driveway when all of a sudden, the pit bull comes running over to say hello. Things escalate quickly.

Mason bends down to greet the dog, but before he even realizes what is going on, the pit bull springs up and tackles him to the ground.

The other two kids freak out and go sprinting off to go get help.

What happens next is hard to watch. The pit bull pins the young boy down and viciously rips at his skin.

“My son, he was just laying on the ground. I mean, he’s six, he kind of knows what to do, but he has never been put in a situation like that,” Mason’s mom told CBS.

Luckily, though, a teenager living in the neighborhood witnessed what was happening and came sprinting over to assist the child before things got too out of control.

His name is Grant Brown and the 19-year-old is an absolute hero. He saved the child’s life.

“As soon as I noticed, I just ran over there without thinking,” said Brown. “I didn’t know how, but I knew I had to get the dog off of the boy”

In the video, Brown can be seen running from several houses down to intervene, the whole time yelling at the dog to get its attention. It works and the pit bull changes his focus to the older boy.

The brief interruption gives Mason a chance to get inside.

Meanwhile, Brown takes off running, trying not to get attacked by the out-of-control dog himself.

However, the pit bull eventually is able to throw him to the ground as well.

“I looked back and my shoes came off. I tripped and fell. The dog was on top of me before I knew it. I had to keep his mouth away from me,” said Brown.

In the end, both boys sustained injuries. Mason received cuts to the back of his head that were deep enough to require staples. He also had several other bad bruises on his face. Brown was bitten on the hand. It’s an unfortunate situation, however, both of the boys are expected to make a full recovery.

Mason’s mom is just thankful Brown was there to save her son’s life. If it wasn’t for his quick reaction and bravery, things could have gone much differently.
