Teen mistakenly moves into a retirement community and goes viral documenting her new life

After connecting with a woman over TikTok and getting to know her for a year or so, 19-year-old Maddi Ann of Norman, Oklahoma, decided to pick up her life and start all over in Arkansas close to the woman and her family.

“She became my TikTok mom … they adopted me.”

When the woman caught wind of an affordable apartment in town, she texted the details to Maddi Ann who snatched up the place sight unseen. A few days later, she left Oklahoma in her rearview mirror and trekked to Arkansas in a U-Haul.

Awesome apartment with a twist

Madi Ann joyfully unpacked, ready for a fresh start. She had secured a job as a nursing assistant for a local health company and stayed busy getting her adorable apartment set up.

But when she passed by the apartment signage out front, she did a doubletake. Whoa!

That’s when Madi Ann discovered that she had accidentally moved into a senior citizen apartment unit! No wonder everyone was asleep earlier in the evening, she surmised.

“The first week of moving here was crazy! I was busy with finding a job and setting up my apartment, I didn’t even notice! I thought it was a bit weird that all of my neighbors were significantly older than me. After my first week, I saw a sign in front of the apartments, and it had clicked!”

Viral videos share in the laughter

Unable to contain her laughter about her gaffe, Madi Ann decided to comically document her multistate adventure and giant-sized whoopsie.

In one TikTok, she shows how excited she is to move to an apartment out of state that she’s never seen.

“And I realize I just moved myself into a retirement home.”

Madi Ann’s TikTok clip has since gone viral, tallying more than 2 million views. Inspired by people’s response to her journey on TikTok, Madi Ann created a couple more including one that shared just how much she loves her new dwelling and neighbors, most of whom are 65 and older.

Best neighbors ever

She describes them as “kind and caring” and it feels as if she’s inherited a gaggle of grandparents.

“I have also become friends with a lot of my neighbors. I have been able to go to dinner with them, have late-night conversations, and I have received some snacks as well! I love getting to know them and developing close relationships as well.”

In a follow-up goofy spoof clip, Madi Ann films herself pretending to chat to “Brenda” and “Betty” as she captioned one of her clips: “This life I’m living is the storyline of a Hallmark movie.”

“How is life at the old folks’ home you might ask? Let me show you. When I get home it’s usually always super quiet. Because most of my neighbors are asleep by the time I get home. But one major perk is that I can play music whenever I want to, because some of them can’t hear.

“Another fun thing about living in the old folks’ home is I can always hear about the tea in town. Another fun thing is whenever I get to come home after a long day, everyone asks me how I’m doing. Anyway, that’s how my life is going here at the old folks’ home. And just remember if you’re struggling with rent, start your early retirement.”

Can she really stay there?

Numerous people have asked Madi Ann how it didn’t dawn on her that she was moving into a retirement home. She explained that it was such a good deal that she signed a lease without ever seeing it. Now she knows why it was such a great deal.

It’s perfectly fine for Madi Ann to live there, too because the unit is equal opportunity housing.

“…they do not discriminate based on age. However, it is designed for senior citizens, as that is the primary age group residing here. I am the only teenager in sight. They have about 10 apartments on site, and I am the only teenager here! It has definitely been fun getting to have extra sets of grandparents. I plan on staying for quite a while! I absolutely love my neighbors.”
