Every fall, the West Des Moines Community School District in Iowa starts the semester off by gathering all of the teachers and staff into an auditorium for a briefing. The superintendent of the district uses the meeting to get everyone up to date on all of the goals and objectives for the year.
Judging by the video of the meeting posted on YouTube by Greg Hudson, it’s not typically a very exciting event.
Although, a few years ago, several of the teachers decided to change things up a bit when they organized a flash mob to take place right in the middle of the superintendent’s speech.

The video of the surprise is something that you just have to check out.
Even those who don’t work in education will be able to appreciate how awesome it is.
“While the West Des Moines Community School District Superintendent was beginning her speech to the staff of WDMCS at the district-wide welcome back meeting, the teachers of the district created a flash mob to the enjoyment of their unsuspecting colleagues,” the video description reads.

As the superintendent drones on about this and that, all of a sudden her Powerpoint slideshow presentation is shut off by the teachers and some loud music starts playing.
The superintendent immediately throws her hands up in the air in shock.
She has no idea what is going on. Then, a lone man walks out through the curtains from backstage to get things started. He begins singing a parody of the song “One Day More” from the musical Les Miserables and everyone in the crowd starts laughing.

Although, the surprise doesn’t stop there.
Soon, other random teachers stand up out of their seats and begin singing as well. The superintendent decides to just give up on her speech for a moment and let the flash mob play out.
One by one, dozens more teachers stand up and join in on the chorus. Eventually, someone with a flag gets up and leads them all in a parade up onto the stage.

It is pretty hilarious to watch.
For several minutes, they all continue to sing the song until ultimately, it ends with the group of teachers all raising their fists in the air in celebration. Out of the hundreds of people in total in the auditorium, only a few handfuls of them were in on the surprise. The rest of the staff were all completely caught off guard.

One might suspect that the flash mob was put on solely by the music teachers of the district.
After all, it did involve a lot of singing, but it turns out, that wasn’t entirely the case.
“Many thanks to the teachers and staff members (only 12 are music teachers) who voluntarily came to school to rehearse in June and July to prepare for this performance!” the video description reads.
We can only imagine how much work it took to put together. Luckily, too, the superintendent took the joke in very good humor. She enjoyed it just as much as everyone else.

However, as soon as the performance was over, she quickly reassumed her spot at the podium to continue. The teachers found their way back to their seats, the auditorium quieted down, and that was that — back to business as usual.
Although, it was certainly a very pleasant surprise. The flash mob is something that all of the teachers in the district will be talking about for many years to come.
