A person doesn’t really know how they’ll handle an emergency situation until they’re actually in it. Sure, we have it ingrained in us to call 911, flee a fire, and assist in CPR. But there are always different variables that could arise – and you might have to think outside of the box.

A South Carolina 7-year-old was forced to make a quick decision one day when he saw his father desperately needing help.

So, what did he do? The boy attempted to save his father’s life by trekking down the highway on his bicycle. That’s right: a brave young boy took his bicycle along the highway in order to come to his dad’s aid.

This is a story that’s made headlines and will have you on the edge of your seat.

Hope On The Highway

A first-grade teacher by the name of Keller Sutherland spotted the “brave” 7-year-old pedaling hard down the highway as if he were on a mission. She noticed the cars on the road zooming to and from and immediately fretted for the boy’s life.

As soon as she got closer to the boy, Sutherland was able to recognize him as a former student, Cameron. Sutherland began questioning Cameron to get to the bottom of what was going on in the boy’s life.

Cameron then suddenly revealed that his father had suffered a diabetic episode and had collapsed at his domicile. The boy said he initially attempted to call 911, but the phone was locked and he did not know his father’s passcode to unlock the phone.

Cameron then went to the neighbors, but unfortunately, nobody was to be found next door. His last method of action was clear: get on the bicycle and pedal for his father’s dear life.

When Greenville County Schools posted the story on their Facebook page, they wrote:

“Teachers create bonds with their students every day. This week a teacher and student saved a life. Keller Sutherland was driving home from Ellen Woodside Elementary when she saw a child riding down Highway 25 on his bicycle. The child appeared scared and was peddling as fast as he could. Sutherland recognized the child as one of her former students. With her help Cameron was able to get home safely and contact first responders to revive his unconscious father.”

They were able to save his life.

After reaching out to the emergency hotline, the first responders followed Sutherland and Cameron to his house. They found Cameron’s father half-conscious on the ground of the restroom. Fortunately for everyone, Cameron’s father was able to recover swiftly at the scene and everything seemed to be in control.

In the end, Sutherland praised Cameron and called him a hero that day.

She had referred to him as the “bravest little boy” she had ever seen. Sutherland felt lucky to be where she needed to be that day in order to make a difference in the young boy’s life.

“God just showed up in an amazing way,” Sutherland mentioned. “On a day when I felt I wasn’t making an impact, He just intervened and placed me where I needed to be for Cameron.”

This story really puts into perspective how far we’re willing to go to help a loved one. Cameron was not daunted by the fears of what could happen.

Instead, he strengthened himself by believing in his ability to make a difference and did so by following his heart and mind. For all those needing to make a call for help on someone’s locked phone, just remember there is an option to make “emergency calls” that can be made to contact law officials and/or first responders.

Thank goodness this story had a happy ending. In fact, Cameron was even rewarded with a brand new bike for his heroic actions that day. What a brave kid, right?
