Every once and a while one of the major retailers releases a new line of clothing that completely blows us away. That’s exactly what happened with Target’s new adaptive Halloween outfits. The costumes are purposefully designed to fit those among us living with disabilities — more specifically, kids in wheelchairs.
It is a demographic that historically has never had a lot of options when it comes to store-bought Halloween gear.
In most cases, they were always limited to masks or forced to wear costumes that weren’t really designed for people in their situation. However, Target realized that something about that just wasn’t right. Thus, their new line of Halloween outfits was born. Every child deserves to have a costume that fits them perfectly and no one should ever be left out.
While the collection currently only includes two costumes, one for boys, and one for girls, we imagine several more are slated to be released in the future. It is uncharted territory for the company, but we have to say, it is definitely a much-needed step in the right direction. We are so happy that Target is one of the first to lead the way in the category.
The two costumes are branded under the name Hyde and Eek Boutique and feature a girls’ princess outfit and a boys’ pirate one.
“A gal with magical dreams and style needs a Halloween costume to match, and the Adaptive Princess Halloween Costume from Hyde and Eek™ Boutique™ makes the perfect pick,” the costume description reads.
The princess outfit was creatively designed with an opening in the back that makes it significantly easier for girls in wheelchairs to take on and off.
One of the coolest parts though is how they included the wheelchair into the outfit’s design.
Two cover accessories fit onto the sides of the wheelchair to make it look like the individual is actually riding in a carriage or chariot.
The boys’ pirate outfit is similar in design.
It makes it look like the child is sailing in a pirate ship and the wheels represent the rolling waves underneath. We love the imagination of it all.
“Shiver me timbers! He’ll be all set to conquer the seven seas searching for buried treasure,” it says in the product description.
The costume also has “leg openings that are wide enough to put the pants on while keeping shoes on — perfect for giving kids who use wheelchairs an extra hand and a sense of comfort.”
It seems like the designers pretty much thought of everything, and really, it warms our heart.
So many kids out there have been waiting for costumes like these for basically forever and now they are finally starting to arrive. It is about time, and we look forward to seeing kids in our neighborhood rolling around in these costumes this October 2019!
It will be so exciting to see what other costume ideas the designers at Hyde and Eek Boutique come up with in the future. We can only hope that the concept catches on and other companies begin releasing their own adaptive costumes as well.
Thank you Target for bringing these awesome outfits to market!
