We often hear stories about people leaving giant tips behind for a server who is a little down on their luck. But this story is a little different.
Claire Hudson did receive a tip while waiting tables at Macโs Grub Shak in Spring Hill, TN that was larger than the bill.
She was absolutely moved by the gesture, however, it had nothing to do with money. The tip meant a lot more to her than that. The 25-year-old was working a double shift when a couple came in and sat in her section.
โIt was actually a really slow day and then this couple came in,โ Hudson told ABC News.
She didnโt think twice about their visit until after they were gone.
โThey ordered a couple of beers,โ she told WKRN. โThey got some hot dogs and I didnโt even notice they had left such a big tip.โ
When she picked up their check she learned that they had left a $36 tip on a bill that wasnโt more than $30.
โI wouldโve liked to have caught them and said โhey this is awesome!'โ she told ABC News. โThey did it anonymously and it was really sweet.โ
The couple didnโt just leave Hudson an inflated tip because they thought she was nice and could use it. They did it for a very specific reason, which made it the best tip her had ever gotten.
They explained that reason in a note they left on a napkin:
โToday is my brotherโs birthday. He would have been 36 today. Every year I go eat his favorite food: hot dogs, and tip the waitress his age. Happy birthday, Wes,โ the note read.
Hudson says she became very emotional when she read the note.
โI didnโt know what to say,โ said Hudson. โI was literally in tears. It was definitely the best tip Iโve ever gotten. Not because of the money or anything but because of the meaning behind it.โ
Hudson says she was really happy that she got to be a part of such a beautiful tradition to their relativeโs someoneโs memory.
The restaurantโs owners were also moved by the gesture and wanted to add a special hot dog on their menu to honor Wes every day. They were searching for Wesโ family online to find out what he liked on his hot dogs so they can add it to their menu.
