One of the hardest things for a parent to teach their child is how to handle grief.
Explaining what death is and how it works can be very tough for a parent. No one wants to ruin their child’s innocence. But sadly, death is a part of life, and children find that out the hard way.
Usually, children first experience death when a beloved pet dies. Cats, dogs, and hamsters become like family in their time living with us.
But even though animals can bring such joy to our lives, they die long before we do, due to their much shorter lifespans. In some cases, children learn about death not because a pet has passed away, but because a family member has.
In some truly heartbreaking instances, it is the child’s parent who has died.
One father wanted to do something special for his son after his son’s mother had passed away.
Antonio Vargas knew that since this was his son’s first Christmas without his mother, he really needed to get him something to cheer his son up.
When he handed his son the teddy bear (which he went through the whole teddy making process at Build-A-Bear for), his son thought it was a joke.
It isn’t every day your dad gets you a teddy bear, right? Well, the bear had a special voice inside of it for Antonio’s son.
When Tonio presses the hand of the bear (who is actually a monkey), his mother’s voice speaks from the bear. She says:
I just wanted to speak to our Tonio and tell him that mummy loves him. Give me a big hug, I love you.
Antonio shared the video on Facebook, with this caption:
“This is a real big touching moment as a parent prepping this monkey to have a heartbeat and to speak to my son, so that my son can hear his mother’s voice again. She passed away on July 4. We always called our son our little monkey. So on Christmas Day, his dream came true!!! I love my little man with all my heart, Daddy loves you.”
The video was shared on the popular Facebook page, LADbible, and has gotten over 240,000 shares and 250,000 likes.
Everyone has had a very emotional response to this video and shared how it made them one. One commenter shared their own video and wrote:
Although I’m much older than Antonio, my dad recently passed away on October 26, 2017. A few days before he died, he recorded small phrases in build a bears for my mom, my 2 sister’s, my brother and I. Although he was very weak at the time he recorded them, I will be forever grateful of this last gift from my Dad.
