The students at Heritage High School in Brentwood, CA have always felt safe because of one person who looks after them, Officer Mitch Brouilette.
Officer Mitch is Heritage High School’s resource officer and he makes sure everyone in the school is safe, especially the students.
“At first, people are a little nervous when they see Officer Mitch,” Chandler from the school said. “But once you have that first conversation with him, you realize that he’s a really cool dude who wants what’s best for the community.”
The folks at dude. be nice wanted to help the Heritage High students to show Officer Mitch how much they appreciate him.
“Most people may feel like they should fear cops but he’s that cool person you can talk to,” Sophie, a Heritage High senior, shared about Officer Mitch.
Who is Officer Mitch? Aside from being the school’s resource officer, he has dedicated himself to be there for the students when they needed someone to support them.
“I want them to know me but also know who I am as a person,” Officer Mitch shared with dude. be nice. “My whole thing is I give them respect so they gotta give respect back. There’s always a good side to somebody. The worst thing I can do on campus is actually arrest a kid… I want to see them walk the stage. I want to see them graduate.”
One of the students he helped out immensely was Daylen.
“He helped me out last year. I was struggling with my anger problems and I was struggling so hard in school,” Daylen recalled. “We worked out in the weight room and that actually helped me relieve a lot of stress. I really want to thank him for helping me become the best man I’ve ever been.”
So together with the dude. be nice team, the students came up with a way to show their gratitude for Officer Mitch.
They have a program called “I Can Help” on campus that helps take out negativity off social media. And Officer Mitch is a part of the program.
They pretended that one of the students, Sienna, took a video at a party and now she’s in trouble because of that video.
While dude. be nice was filming Officer Mitch for the “Brentwood Press,” the Vice Principal arrives to bring him to the office to deal with Sienna’s problem.
When they get to the office, Sienna is waiting for them. Officer Mitch tried to get her to relax before he sat down beside her.
The Vice Principal was about to hand Sienna’s cellphone to Officer Mitch but told Sienna first that she’ll have to show Officer Mitch the video.
And when he pressed play, the video the students created for him began to play.
Sienna, who was covering her face pretending to be downtrodden, started to laugh. She was also on the video and told Officer Mitch they wanted to show how much they appreciated him.
Officer Mitch tried to unsuccessfully hold back his tears.
And when he came out of the office, Brent of “Brentwood Press”, but is actually the man behind dude. be nice, greeted him and asked him how it went.
“That was great, man,” Officer Mitch replied.
But Brent told him it’s not over yet and he should go outside.
Watch the rest of the video below and see what the Heritage High students did to thank Officer Mitch for everything he’s done for them.
