LEGOs are one of the most popular kid’s toys of all time. Children of all ages love making things with the little blocks. While most LEGO creations are purely fun in nature, how about building an actual functional structure?
That is what street artist Megx had in mind when he set out to make a bridge appear as though it was constructed by the colored plastic bricks.
His epic LEGO street art installation is something that you just have to check out for yourself. It turns out, adults can have just as much fun with LEGOs as kids can.
While technically, the bridge is not actually built out of LEGOs, when driving by, it certainly looks like it is.
The functional art piece can be found just outside of Wuppertal in western Germany, located in the Rhine-Westphalia region. Officially, it is known as the Schwesterstraße bridge, but most people in the area simply know it as the Lego bridge. It was originally constructed as part of a railway line but has since been repurposed as a path for pedestrians and bicycles.
After getting permission from the city, Megx painted over the dilapidated structure.
He completely transformed it from bland and ugly concrete to beautiful work of art. The support beams of the bridge appear as though they are made from interlocking red, yellow, and blue LEGO bricks, while the top walkway looks like it was fashioned from one of the flat green baseplates.
The street artist took inspiration from his two daughters who both love playing with LEGOs as well.
When looking at the photos of the art piece on Megx’s Instagram account, one can’t help but reminisce about all of the childhood fun that was had building things with LEGOs. It is a toy that spans multiple generations, with grandparents, kids, and grandkids, all having enjoyed the building blocks at some point.
The first set of LEGOs was created by The Lego Group in 1949 for children in Denmark. However, the interlocking toy bricks have since spread all around the world, becoming a staple item in many households.
Really, the only difference between a childhood LEGO creation and Megx’s is the sheer scale of the project.
That and the fact that an actual bridge made out of LEGOs would likely not be structurally sound enough to support the weight of several tons worth of cars passing over. At best you would be able to run a couple of Hotwheels cars over a true LEGO bridge.
Although, Megx’s painted concrete version is still just as awesome.
Due to detailed shadowing and other techniques that the artist used, the end result turned out extremely lifelike. Even though the concrete surface is flat, Megx was able to make the circular connectors appear like they are popping right out of the LEGO bricks.
The bridge is around 2700 square feet in total, and it took Megx and his team just over two weeks to complete the project in 2011.
They were awarded the Deutscher Fassadenpreis Advancement Prize for their work just over a year later in 2012.
All in all, the jumbo LEGO brick bridge is one of the coolest works of street art we have ever seen. We love how creative it is and Megx certainly deserves a lot of props. We can’t wait to see what other cool projects he and his team of artists come up with in the future.
