When you hear the word “sunflower,” only one picture comes to mind.

The sunflower plant has a hairy, thick stem that supports the beautiful bright yellow flower. It also has broad, large leaves which are of oval shape and are arranged alternately.

There are also smaller leaves that are narrower and are attached individually to the stem.

Sunflower also means good luck in Chinese culture.

That’s why we often see sunflowers being given to special events such as business inaugurations and graduations.

For ancient Greeks, it is believed that sunflowers always face the sun because the nymph Clytie loved Apollo – the God of the Sun.

At first, Apollo loved Clytie, too but soon fell for a nymph named Leucothoe.

Clytie, who was blinded by jealousy, told Leucothoe’s father about Apollo and his daughter’s relationship. Enraged, he punished his daughter by burying her alive.

Soon, Apollo found out about what happened, and he turned Clytie into a flower. Even in this form, the poor nymph still loved Apollo that she would spend all her days watching him from afar.
