Most of us who have gone through a public or private school educational system, or have children who have, know a teacher who has gone above and beyond their call of duty.
It’s just within their nature to nourish children and help them grow.
Whether it’s staying after hours to help tutor students or offering to throw an impromptu graduation ceremony in a hospital room for a parent too sick to attend, teachers are known to go the extra mile.
Sabrina Drude is one of those teachers.
But one day when she was in a Texas Wal-Mart buying school supplies for her students that her district wouldn’t pay for, a complete stranger decided to go the extra mile for her.
Drude’s was in line to pay for a cart full of hundreds of notebooks, pencils, and markers. Then a man behind her began to ask her a series of questions.
He wondered why she had all this stuff for school children but didn’t have any children with her.
Drude, a seventh-grade teacher at Francis Scobee Middle School in San Antonio, told him that many of her students aren’t able to afford their school supplies unlike some of their peers.
“I don’t want them to have to deal with that embarrassment of them not even wanting to tell me,” Drude said of her students, according to CBS News.
So, Drude goes out of her way to pay for them. The man, whose name is Lester Brown, was taken a back by the woman’s selfless gesture. He told her that he wanted to pay for everything in her cart. She thanked him but said she couldn’t possibly allow him to do that.
However, when the register rang up her $97, Brown jumped in to pay for it.
“He said, ‘Put your wallet away,’ and I just started crying,” Drude explained to CBS News. “That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.”
Brown, a pastor, father of five and a re-entry specialist for the Texas Justice Department, told Drude that he wanted to do it because teachers don’t get enough recognition, but he also had another reason.
“It was the right thing to do,” he told WLTX 19. “It’s what God said to do and it’s that simple. I remember I had this hundred-dollar bill with the intention of responding to something in need, and God said to respond. He inspired me and so many others to be kinder and do whatever you can for your fellow human.”
Brown hopes that people will do whatever they are able, whether it’s volunteering or helping a family, to take care of their neighbors and just be kind to one another when they can.
