Welcome to 7-Eleven.
Like Walmart after a certain hour, you’ll see everything at the popular convenience store.
From people buying gas to packs of smokes, 7-Eleven has a little bit of everything.
It was just a regular day at the local 7-Eleven…
Things were going exactly like any other day,
Until…
Jay Singh, the store’s owner, noticed something suspicious on the security camera.
Weird behavior’s often just behavior with no rhyme or reason.
Other times, weird behavior is indicative of something else… like theft.
Jay says the camera caught a teen loitering and leaving to the corner of the store numerous times.
He noticed that it wasn’t just indecision.
Something was off.
To a store owner, this type of behavior is questionable.
Fortunately, people are innocent until proven guilty.
I’ve perused the snack section millions of times. Sometimes it’s hard to make up your mind.
Soon enough, the store owner confronts the teen.
Jay’s certain he’s hiding something.
The suspicion has now manifested in reality.
Soon enough, Jay forces his hand, literally. The teen stops in his tracks, emptying his pockets.
The potential thief had little on him. The sum total of the candy and small food items he had pocketed was less than $20.
That’s certainly no meal!
But why?
One must always consider motive. The store owner and the teen’s ensuing exchange tells us everything.
“Why are you doing this?”
Let’s get to the bottom of this.
“I am hungry.”
It’s that simple.
“I’m stealing it for myself and my younger brother.”
Jay was contemplating police reinforcement.
But this 7-Eleven owner understands life’s subtle nuances. People don’t have much control over their circumstances.
Nobody should go to jail for trivial crimes when compelled to steal just to put food on the table.
Plus, what’s the point of further punishment if somebody’s already learned their lesson?
People generally don’t steal out of malice. There are other motivators.
911 didn’t need to hear this one.
So instead of calling the authorities or shaming the teen, you know what Jay did?
He gave the child a meal.
Nobody should go hungry. Nor should anybody be compelled to steal out of hunger.
Jay treated the teen like a human being the entire time.
Instead of dismissing him, he proceeded to help, simultaneously teaching him a lesson.
There are consequences to even the most trivial thefts, of course.
But sometimes strict punishment doesn’t work as well as other methods.
Naturally, the scene at the 7-Eleven went viral.
People respect honesty and empathy. And if you’re in trouble, you’d be surprised how many people are willing to help.
Everyone in that 7-Eleven experienced something unforgettable.
This is the power of human decency.
