They say that only the good die young. This sounds silly, but when you think of all the incredible celebrities that we’ve lost over the years, perhaps it’s true. Princess Diana, Heath Ledger and Steve Irwin were all fantastic people.
You probably remember Steve Irwin in a very specific way.
He was the happy go lucky Australian adventurer who hunted crocodiles for a living.
But there was so much more to him. He was a family man who loved his kids above everything else.
And if you needed any convincing that this is true, then just look at the heartwarming viral video that was recently posted online.
The footage dates back to 1998 (but the interviews are from 2003), when Irwin and his wife were in the hospital, anticipating the delivery of their daughter.
It shows the happy family, shortly after Irwin’s wife, Terri Irwin, has completed her labor. She holds her child, Bindi, in her arms and proclaims “I thought you were gonna be a boy!”
But look behind her in this shot. Look at the amazement on Steve Irwin’s face as he sees his wife and his baby.
They’re the two people that he loves the most in the world. And he can’t believe it!
“I can’t dwell on her for too long, or I start bawling my eyes out.” – Steve Irwin.
That is already incredibly heartwarming. But it gets even better.
Irwin reveals that since his daughter was born, he takes a photo of her and himself out into the wilderness. He then says that just looking at that photo makes him start crying over her.
Wow, Steve Irwin was clearly an incredible dad!
He even gives some advice on fatherhood in the video. It’s touching and incredibly Australian at the same time:
“And to tell you the truth, mate, all I do is just treat her exactly how I would want to be treated.”
And of course, having a father who was the world famous Crocodile Hunter was not easy.
Irwin just wanted Bindi to grow up in a normal manner. He tried as hard as possible to achieve that aim. However, he had to balance this with his unusual lifestyle.
Irwin explains in the video that if he goes out to jump on crocodiles, “then by crikey, I want her jumping on crocs with me.”
Sadly, not too long after this interview was recorded, Steve Irwin died. He was doing what he loved, when a freak accident meant that Irwin’s wife and children could never see him again.
His loss is clearly still being felt by Irwin’s family and by the public in general.
The video that showcased Steve Irwin’s devotion to Bindi was uploaded by the daughter herself.
Recently she put it up on Facebook with a beautiful comment.
“Thank you, Dad, this moment captured on camera made my whole life. I love you so much.” Bindi Irwin.
And since being uploaded, Bindi Irwin’s post has had a huge reaction.
It’s been liked over 200,000 times, shared over 190,000 times and received more than 18k comments.

Even though Bindi Irwin’s time with her father was cut short, it was still highly significant. Thanks to Steve Irwin’s influence, his daughter has gone on to become an actress, a TV presenter, a conservationist, a singer, a dancer and a model. And she’s still only 20 years old!
If this shows us one thing, it’s that we should cherish any time that we can spend with our family. We never know when will be the last time that we see them.
