As vast and as diverse as America is, it is only natural for cultures to vary should you find yourself traveling from state to state. Social interaction isn’t always pleasant so go through this list and see just how rude some states can be.
Of course, it goes without saying that being nice and polite still goes a long way. Just consider yourself warned.
50. Minnesota
To many, it isn’t surprising that Minnesota is at the bottom of the list.
Minnesotans just don’t seem to be rude. Best Life puts this state at the bottom of their rankings for general unfriendliness, as well as 48th for rude customers.
The percentage that was considered rude wasn’t even over one percent.
The overall “Rudeness Score” given was a big zero, though the rudest city was Minneapolis-St. Paul.
49. South Carolina
South Carolinians are pretty polite folks overall. Their unfriendly and rude customer rankings were 48th and 47th.
Their percentage of rude drivers was only 2.1., while the overall rudeness score Best Life gave the state was 2.31.
48. Louisiana
Best Life showed another jump in the rankings, this time between South Carolina to Louisiana.
The state ranked 39th in terms of their unfriendly citizens, with a ranking of 49th for rude customers.
The rudest city in Louisiana was New Orleans with an overall rudeness score of 7.02.
That’s not really a surprise for many.
47. Mississippi
Mississippi is one of the friendlier states, but there’s been a jump in the level of unfriendliness.
A general unfriendly ranking of 28, also has rude customers ranked 47th.
The percentage of the population that are rude drivers are only 1.3 percent so Best Life determined that the state’s overall rudeness score was at 10.04.
46. Tennessee
The percentage of the state considered rude by Best Life was only 0.5 percent.
The state’s general unfriendliness rank was 49th, with a rude customer ranking at 30th.
Percentage of rude drivers was only at 2.1.
The state as a whole considered rude was just at 0.5 percent with the rudest cities in Tennessee being Nashville and Memphis.
Considering the cities’ popularity and size, that adds up.
45. Hawaii
Hawaii is known for vacationing and relaxing so it doesn’t even have a rudest city.
But there are rude people living there. Percentage of rude drivers was 3.9 percent.
The state ranked 41st for general unfriendliness and they did rank at the bottom of rude customers.
Overall rudeness score was at 17.07.
44. Colorado
Colorado ranked low for both its unfriendliness and and rude customers, with 44th and 42nd respectively.
The percentage of rude drivers was at 3.6, with the amount of state considered rude at 0.22 percent.
Best Life determined overall rudeness to be 19, while the rudest city believed to be Denver.
43. Vermont
Vermont is a state known for its peaceful vibe. They are not at the bottom of the list, but 43rd overall isn’t bad.
Rude customer ranking was 45th, but they do have a surprisingly high unfriendly rank at 17th.
Percentage of rude drivers was only 1.5 percent though, so Best Life determined their overall rudeness to be 20.59.
42. Texas
A state the size of Texas is actually pretty relaxed.
Though it has four cities that are considered rude, being Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.
They have a moderate ranking for rude customers at 24th, but general unfriendliness is at 47th.
The percentage considered rude, including drivers, was 1.1 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.
Best Life gave the state an overall rudeness score of 21.1.
41. Kentucky
Kentucky’s rudest city is Louisville, while the percentage of rude drivers is only one percent.
Percentage of rude people in the state is only 0.32 percent while general unfriendliness and rude customers are middling, at 32nd and 25th.
Best Life ended up giving the state a rudeness score of 21.35.
40. Alabama
Alabama’s rude percentage seems to be concentrated in Birmingham, considered to be its rudest city.
The percentage found rude is only 0.4 percent, with rude drivers being 2.1 percent.
The state ranked 30th in unfriendliness and 36th in rude customers, so the rudeness score given by Best Life was 22.96.
39. North Carolina
North Carolina has a rather high unfriendliness putting them at 18th, but rude customer ranking was low at 40th.
The percentage of the state considered rude was 0.35 percent, with 1.6 percent of the population considered as rude drivers.
The stats were a split up of its two rudest cities, Charlotte and Raleigh.
Best Life gave this state a rudeness score of 24.93.
38. Oklahoma
The city considered the rudest is Oklahoma City, though, the state isn’t considered incredibly rude.
Unfriendly rank was 42nd, while their rude customer rank was 26th.
The percentage considered rude was 0.38 percent, while the percentage of rude drivers is at 2.6 percent.
The overall rudeness score was 25.02.
37. Missouri
Missouri’s St. Louis and Kansas City were noted for their rudeness.
The state’s whole percentage of people considered rude is 0.35 percent, while rude drivers were at 2.6 percent.
Their ranking for general unfriendliness was 29th while rude customers was at 37th.
This had Best Life giving the state an overall rudeness score of 26.35.
36. Maine
Maine is not a heavily populated state, so the amount of rude people living there have more weight to their ranking.
Percentage of rude drivers is around 1.6 percent, though they have a high rank for unfriendliness at 20th.
Their rude customer rank is at 33rd, which led to an overall rudeness score from Best Life at 27.62.
35. Nebraska
Nebraska’s rankings for unfriendly and rude customers are somewhat middling at 38th and 34th respectively.
Although rude drivers, relative to the state’s population, is a little high, at 3.6 percent.
The overall rudeness score was at 28.33.
34. Kansas
The rudest Kansas City is in Missouri. Though with that said, Kansas is still a ruder state.
Rude drivers are at 3.6 percent, its unfriendly rank is 43rd, while rude customer rank is 27th.
This leads to an overall rudeness score of 29.73.
33. Indiana
The rudest city is Indianapolis. The percentage considered rude is 0.41 percent, with rude drivers at 2.1.
The state has a pretty low unfriendliness rank of 45th, but that’s counterbalanced by their high rude customer rank at 11th.
Indiana’s rudeness score by Best Life, ended up at 29.99.
32. Oregon
It’s not surprising to know that Portland is the rudest city in Oregon.
Just 0.41 percent of the population is considered rude, while 3.6% of them are rude drivers.
They have middling ranks for unfriendliness at 27th, with rude customers at 38th.
A pretty big increase in the overall rudeness score from Best Life had the state jump to 34.22.
31. New Hampshire
Surprisingly, New Hampshire is unfriendly, ranking seventh of all states.
Its rude customer rank is 44th, so it’s like they really just try to keep to themselves.
2.6 percent of the population are considered rude drivers so the rudeness score given by Best Life was 36.06.
30. Pennsylvania
The two rudest cities are its most famous ones, namely Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
And given what people know, it’s really not that surprising.
The percentage considered rude is 1.31 percent, while drivers considered rude are 2.6%.
They do have more middling ranking for unfriendliness and rude customers, at 33rd and 22nd.
The state’s rudeness score from Best Life was 36.36.
29. Arkansas
Arkansas, the second unfriendliest state in America.
That alone would tank their ranking, but fortunately for them, they have a low ranking of rude customers at 43rd.
Rude drivers in the state is at 2.1 percent so overall rudeness score from Best Life is 36.77.
28. Georgia
Not surprising that the rudest city in Georgia is Atlanta.
The percentage that is rude is 0.44 percent while rude drivers is higher than most at 4.4 percent of their population.
They do have low rankings for unfriendliness and rude customers, at 35th and 32nd respectively.
Best Life gave this state a rudeness score of 38.51.
27. Florida
Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando are considered to be the rudest cities.
Florida is also the ninth unfriendliest state, which is countered by the rude customer rank of 39th. Pretty low.
The percentage of the state considered rude is 0.52 percent, with rude drivers at 2.6 percent.
This led to a rudeness score of 39.41.
26. New Mexico
New Mexico is a sparsely occupied state that ranks second in terms of rude customers.
Their ranking with unfriendliness isn’t as bad, at a more middling 34.
The percentage of rude drivers is at 1.6 percent, so Best Life gave the state a rudeness score of 39.58.
25. Nevada
It’s not surprising that the rudest city in Nevada is Las Vegas. The state just seems a bit belligerent.
Their unfriendliness rank was eighth with rude customer rank at 31.
Percentage of rude people and drivers is almost one-to-one, at 1.68 percent to 1.6 percent.
The state’s rudeness score by Best Life is 41.46.
24. West Virginia
West Virginia ranks high for unfriendliness and rude customers, at 21st and 12th respectively.
The percentage of rude drivers is at 1.6.
The state’s Best Life rudeness score is a bit higher than Nevada’s at 41.69 too.
And unlike Nevada, they don’t have big tourist locations.
23. Maryland
If you guessed Baltimore to be the rudest city, you’d be correct.
Maryland ranks poorly in regard to unfriendliness and rude customers.
The state ranked 24th in unfriendliness and 16th in rude customers.
1.1 percent of the state is known to be rude, while 2.1 percent of the drivers are considered rude.
The rudeness score for Maryland by Best Life was 42.9.
22. Connecticut
Just 0.11 percent of Connecticut is considered rude, and that’s mostly in Hartford.
2.1 percent of their drivers are considered rude, while their unfriendliness rank is 13th, which is pretty bad.
The state’s rude customer rank is in the upper half at 23rd, so their rudeness score is 43.35.
21. Arizona
Phoenix is their rudest state with 0.42 percent considered rude, and 2.6 percent of the drivers considered rude as well.
In terms of unfriendliness ranking, Arizona is 12th. Rude customer ranking is slightly below at 29th.
The state’s overall rudeness score was 44.1.
20. South Dakota
This state has an unfriendly ranking at 31, though customers are more rude with a ranking of 13.
The percentage of rude drivers is 3.1 percent.
A state so unpopulated can’t be this rude, but they cracked the top 20 in the United States.
Best Life rudeness score was 44.5.
19. Ohio
Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus are the rudest cities but the state has a low population of rude people at 0.46 percent.
4.3 percent of their drivers are considered rude, and they are low in the unfriendliness category, at 40th.
Rude customer ranking is higher at 17th resulting in an overall rudeness score from Best Life at 44.9.
18. Illinois
Illinois has a rare distinction in that, by percent, more of its population (at 3.94 percent) is considered rude as opposed to its rude drivers at 3.1 percent.
Unfriendliness rank is 37th, while rude customer rank is higher at 18th.
The rudest city is Chicago so the state gets a rudeness score of 46.13.
17. Michigan
Michigan’s rudest city is Detroit, with 0.78 percent of the population considered rude.
2.6 percent of drivers are considered rude.
The state has bad rankings when it comes to unfriendliness and rude customers, landing at 23rd and 15th.
Best Life rudeness score for the state is 47.05.
16. Wyoming
Wyoming’s high percentage of rude drivers is at 4.8 percent, and they do have a low unfriendliness ranking at 46th.
They are still the 10th rudest state in regards to rude customers.
The overall Best Life rudeness score was 48.02 for the state.
15. Montana
Montana doesn’t have a city known for being rude, but they do have bad rankings for unfriendliness and rude customers.
They ranked 15th and 19th in both categories, while 2.6 percent of the drivers are considered rude.
Best Life gave Montana an overall rudeness score of 48.02.
14. New Jersey
Some people expected New Jersey to top this least, and that isn’t for a lack of trying.
On the unfriendliness ranking, the state was fifth. Rude customer ranking was a little more middling at 35th.
3.6 percent of the drivers were considered rude.
The rudeness score given by Best Life for this state was 50.83.
13. North Dakota
North Dakota’s unfriendliness ranking was just in the bottom half at 26th among other states.
But rude customer ranking was higher at seventh. Drivers considered rude was also pretty high at 3.1 percent.
Best Life gives the state a rudeness score of 52.24.
12. Delaware
Delaware’s rankings are on opposite ends of the spectrum with rude customer ranking at 41st but unfriendliness in third.
The percentage of rude drivers sits at 4.2 percent, putting them high up on the rankings.
Best Life gave the state a rudeness score of 52.24 thanks to these factors.
11. Wisconsin
The percentage of rude citizens is pretty low at 0.15 percent.
But they do have bad rankings in the other categories. 3.8 percent of the drivers are considered rude.
Rude customer ranking is ninth, while unfriendliness ranking, its best one, is 25th.
The rudest city is Milwaukee, and their overall rudeness score from Best Life was 56.82.
10. Idaho
The state has a high percentage of rude drivers at 4.9 percent, while rude customer ranking is eighth.
This does get offset somewhat but its unfriendliness ranking, 36th, is still rude enough to have it make the top ten.
Their rudeness score by Best Life is 57.16.
9. California
Considering its reputation, it is not surprising that this state ranks ninth overall.
It has the most cities considered the “rudest”, namely Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, and Riverside.
2.47 percent is considered rude, with 3.1 percent being drivers.
California’s unfriendliness rank is 11th with its rude customer ranking at 21st.
This leads to a score given by Best Life at 58.82.
8. Rhode Island
Providence, Rhode Island is the rudest city in the state. Not a high percentage is considered rude, at 0.26 percent, but its enough to get eighth place on this list.
3.1 percent of drivers are considered rude, and its unfriendliness rank is tenth, with rude customers ranked 14th.
Best Life gave this state a score of 59.1
7. Massachusetts
Massachusetts’ cities are known for their citizens being belligerent, especially in Boston, the rudest city.
That doesn’t mean everyone is rude, since only 1.5 percent of the population is considered so.
Although, 3.1 percent of the drivers are rude. Its unfriendliness rank is bad at fourth place, with a rude customer rank of 20th.
This led to a notable jump in the rudeness score at 62.13.
6. Utah
Just 0.1 percent of Utah’s population is considered rude, and they make up for it in other areas.
Percentage of rude drivers is 3.6 percent, while unfriendliness ranking is 19th.
Rude customer ranking is fifth, and the rudest city is Salt Lake City.
The state’s Best Life rudeness score is 62.32.
5. Alaska
With their small population and nature, it’s surprising that they’re high on the list.
But a small population means that the rudeness of each citizen is more noticeable.
The percentage of rude drivers is 3.1. They also have an unfriendliness rank of 14.
Alaska is the third rudest state in America when it comes to customers so Best Life gave them a score of 63.49.
4. Iowa
Iowa boasts a higher percentage of rude drivers at 4.1.
Its overall unfriendliness is also 22nd, just a few notches above the middle spot.
Their most notable point is a fourth place spot for rude customers.
The state gets an overall rudeness score from Best Life at 64.19.
3. Washington
Washington’s score jumped in its rudeness score.
While only 0.31 percent of them are rude, with 3.1 percent of drivers giving the same treatment, they have abysmal rankings in unfriendliness and rude customers.
Both rankings for the state were sixth, with its rudest city being Seattle.
So the overall rudeness score from Best Life was 67.74.
2. Virginia
The number two spot has some of the worst statistics for a rude state.
It’s surprising that Virginia’s number two, with its rudest cities being Virginia Beach and Richmond.
Only 0.14 percent of the state is considered rude, but its got other stats to make up for it.
They have the highest percentage of rude drivers at five percent.
Their unfriendliness ranking was 16th while its rude customer ranking was first.
Best Life gave them a rudeness score of 77.19.
1. New York
New York being the number one rudest state is no surprise, with its rudest cities being New York City and Buffalo.
The percentage considered rude was a whopping 14.79 percent, while rude drivers were at 4.5 percent.
Rude customer ranking was 28th, but their unfriendliness ranking was first.
This led to Best Life giving New York an unprecedented 100.05 for its rudeness score.
