In March of 1964, a song was recorded by a duo in Columbia Studios, New York City to be included in their debut album Wednesday Morning, 3 AM. The album was released on October 19, 1964. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a success. It was so bad that it led to the duo disbanding.

It wasn’t until 1965 that this particular song began to play on the airwaves in order to attract airplay. Tom Wilson, the song’s producer, decided to remix the track.

“The Sound of Silence” was released again in September of 1965 without Simon and Garfunkel knowing about it.

The remix proved to be an excellent decision. The song was a hit and is still a hit today. It is one of those instantly recognizable classics, a constant favorite for many aspiring and known musicians to cover.

The song is so flexible it allows other musicians to change it up according to their own style while maintaining its iconic melody.

Check out Celtic Thunder‘s rendition.

This Irish singing and stage group show are known for their theatrical style shows using flashy and dramatic set pieces based on their culture. We’re talking ancient Celtic mythology and symbols with stunning visual effects and such. The works.

Check out the stage on this one.

Shaped like a Celtic cross with another cross hanging in the back with stone circles completing the effect, the lighting gives a chilling, mysterious effect on the get go. It’s all about dramatics.

Their version of the song is more folk rock, utilizing electric guitars and drums but accompanied by acoustics and strings. These two men sing together but blending in a harmony so pleasing to the ears.

“Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence”

Now these two men perform with so much poise. Standing onstage, holding guitars and singing as smoothly as those faces, their blue eyes seem to take you back to a time when men and women lived on the hills of Ireland, before technology was born.

A viewer says,

“I am a big Simon and Garfunkel fan, and these two young men have captured the essence of that duo. Loved this rendition. I’m sure Simon and Garfunkel will be pleased when they hear it.”

High praises.

And it really is a fantastic cover. It is one smooth flowing jam of a classic, so easy to listen to. Imagine driving down your favorite highway at night with this playing on the stereo. Right?

Simon and Garfunkel had no idea their song would have this kind of legacy. With so much talent in the world, it’s hard to imagine this song fading away in to the shadows.

Another viewer said,

“Love this classic song. Colm has such beautiful blue eyes! And, Keith, of course just keeps getting better and better :) Great duet.”

A band with the name of Celtic Thunder is very cool too. A classic song blended with the art and style of the Irish? Perfect.
