When you ask a seven year old to sing a song for you, it would probably be a common nursery rhyme or a well known pop song currently in the charts today.

You wouldn’t think a kid would ever sing a song from… 1961. Well, meet Sophie Fatu.

This gorgeous seven year old with her curly locks and oh-so-brilliant eyes may very well be the reincarnation of Holly Golightly. Sophie is here to serenade you with a classic called “Moon river”. Yes, THAT Moon river.

This little lady is unbelievably camera-friendly with her glow and sweet smile. And to think she doesn’t have her two front teeth yet.

She tilts her head left to right as she sways to the melodic intro of the piano before belting out the unmistakable intro usually associated with baritone singers of that age. Sophie’s voice is very much of an adorable little girl and her pronunciations show the same.

Her “river” is “wiver“, while her “mile” sounds a bit like “ma-wl“. Her “crossing”? It’s “cwossing“. And of course she has the trademark lisp of her “S” being “th“. She is too cute.

Oh but don’t let her fool you. Sophie sings her heart out all while maintaining her poise and composure on camera. How many of us can honestly do the same?

The song was composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics from Johnny Mercer. It was originally performed by Audrey Hepburn in a movie you may know as Breakfast from Tiffany’s.

The film was loosely based on the 1958 novel of the same name written by Truman Capote.

Hepburn is Holly Golightly. A naive, eccentric, cafe society girl in New York which was a challenge for Audrey as she was a natural introvert. Her performance has helped turn the film in to a cult classic and her look and style as Holly Golightly has inspired countless women from the 60s to today. Go see the movie if you don’t know.

The scene in question is when Paul Varjak (played by George Peppard) discovers Holly Golightly playing guitar and singing the song while seated on the fire escape in their apartment. This is the first time the song’s lyrics were first heard.

It’s one of those more unforgettable scenes in cinematic history.

Sophie’s delivery of the first few lines hit with nostalgia and immediately, images of Hepburn’s character flood the mind.

“Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style some day”

The thing about Sophie is she maintains her smile and eye contact with the camera all the way until the end of her singing. Never running out of breathe, never flinching, she exudes a natural confidence. Oh and those eyes truly are lovely.

Little Miss Fatu is one artist the world will look forward to seeing grow and develop as a musician. The seven year old wonder is a refreshing break from mainstream music too.
