Who doesn’t love getting a blast from the past?
There are many ways to bring back old childhood memories, whether it’s a certain sound, smell, or perhaps visiting a place that has everything combined.
For a lot of us, passing by an old car from childhood is a great way to take a trip down memory lane – especially if the vehicle carried a special meaning in your heart.
For one man, a search for nostalgia took him all around the country.
John Berry had been wanting to buy his late mother’s car for decades. It’s been a tough journey, but finally, years later, he was able to do so.
The car he was searching for was a green Cutlass Supreme that his father bought his mother back in 1971 – a hard car to miss!
John remembers driving around town in the car when he was young, with his mom behind the wheel.
John told WCPO 9:
“I remember my mom getting in and putting the top down, putting a scarf around her head, and putting her sunglasses on to go for a ride.”
The memory was so important to him because his mom unexpectedly passed away when he was 15 years old.
After her passing, John’s dad held onto the car for a few years before putting it up for sale.
At the time, John wasn’t interested in it and when his dad finally sold it, it wasn’t that big of a deal.
As he got older, however, he recognized that he never really kept any of his mom’s belongings to remember her by and he regretted it.
With that in mind, he made it his mission to find the vintage car himself.
He was able to track down the man who bought it but he lived about as far north in the country as you can go!
John lived in Kentucky and had to drive all the way to Traverse City, Michigan to get more information.
When he finally talked to the man who bought it all those years ago, he wasn’t interested in selling it.
Still, John stayed in contact with the man for around 22 years, and finally, it happened.
The man was getting into his later years and decided he had driven the car all he needed. He was willing to sell it to John.
With the car finally in his possession, he was able to connect with his mom like he had hoped to for so many years.
John looked through the car and found all sorts of things!
Notably, he found a pair of her sunglasses in the glove box and a few maps that had her handwriting on them from past trips.
There were also some earrings and other trinkets that truly meant the world to him. He told WCPO 9:
“…that was another trip down memory lane.”
Finally reunited with his mom’s car, he is able to help his kids connect with their grandma!
In a video, you can see them sitting in the classic seats, smiling.
Enjoying your childhood memories isn’t just a beautiful thing for you – but it’s also an excellent way to connect different generations together.
