As a person who has sisters, I can honestly say I feel blessed. Sure, growing up with siblings isn’t always easy – and if you did too, then you probably remember times of teasing, squabbling, and borrowing without asking.
But no matter how many little tiffs occurred in the past, having a sister is among the greatest gifts in this world. Below are the reasons why you should be thanking your lucky stars (and your parents) that you were given a life-long friend.
A sister can be the best person to talk to (or vent to).
There are times when you need advice, a shoulder to cry on, or simply just to be listened to. Your sister has probably filled those roles countless times during your life.
From childhood through adulthood, she’s a person who’ll help you navigate through problems regardless of their size! And because you’re in the same age bracket and from the same family – she can probably relate to a lot of issues you’re experiencing as well. It’s a comforting feeling when you have a sister who’ll always lend their ear.
You had footsteps you could follow.
Being a kid or teenager has its tough points with everything being so new. However, if you had a big sister, there was someone on the same path just several steps ahead.
She might have helped you learn about clothing styles, how to do your hair and makeup, or about handling relationships. If you looked up to your sister when you were young, she gave you some material to work with!
They’re always in your corner.
Sisters might not always get along, but the moment a problem arises you have each other’s back. Perhaps there were times when your sister called you names when you were little (and vice versa). Yet, if someone else did the same? Lookout! Siblings sticking together is a beautiful thing.
Having a sister means you have someone to retell childhood stories with.
It can be fun sitting with a friend and going over experiences from the past. But no one knows your childhood better than a sister – because frankly, you share the same memories!
You can have conversations about old homes, familiar smells, or laugh about the sneaky things you did without mom and dad knowing. You remember the same movies, the same games, and the places you vacationed to. It’s almost like having a second you!
Being able to converse with a sister OR brother about your favorite childhood memories is a gift in itself. Interestingly, about 80% of people in the United States have at least one sibling, according to U.S. News.
A sister can bring out your inner-youth.
Since you experienced life together as kids, being around each other as adults might evoke that youthful spirit. You might giggle like teenage girls, listen to old music, or repeat the same movie line for the 1000th time. You might not be afraid to act silly, or perhaps you still innocently tease one another. Don’t you love having a sister?
She helped shape you.
We learn a lot by growing up with a sister. Side by side you learn how to share, squash arguments, and about responsibilities. But parts of who you are may come from their positive and negative modeling.
Maybe she inspired you to be more giving, or you decided not to make the same bad choices by watching her behavior. A sister is part of your life and in certain ways has helped make you “you.”
A sister is a beautiful gift that only some of us were fortunate enough to receive. Remind yours how grateful you are for her!
