In 2018, The X Factor TV show featured a lot of new talent. Usually on the show singers audition and are passed on to the next rounds based on their skill level. Two teens in particular, 16-year-old Acacia K. and 15-year-old Aaliyah Robinson caught the eye of judge Simon Cowell. Instead of giving them an immediate no, he had them come back on stage and perform as a duo.

What resulted was nothing short of magic as the singers seemed to compliment each other’s style. The result, a better overall performance as the duo was passed on to the competition rounds. Here is more about their amazing run on the show and that special initial audition.

Even though individually both teens thought it was over for their chances of making it through to the show from the auditions, Simon had different plans. So, when he stopped them during their performances and told them to go back stage, they were assuming the worst. Instead, he met them backstage and told them he wanted them to perform together. They probably had no idea on the impact they would have.

Born in 2003 in Lancashire, England, 15-year old Aaliyah performed the AWOLnation hit song “Sail.” Unfortunately, her performance of the popular song did not wow the judges, leading to Simon stopping the performance part way through. Simon then told the young singer to go back stage and think of a better song to perform as the one she had chose was not the right song for her.

Acacia K. was born in England in 2003. At 16-years-old, the singer had already won her first singing competition, Teen Star. She probably thought she had a good chance of moving on to the next round of the show, so when Simon stopped her part way through her rendition of “Bed of Lies” by Nicki Minaj and told her to meet him backstage, she was probably puzzled.

Upon returning to the stage, the duo wowed the judges with an on-point rendition of “Bang, Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj. Simon’s fellow judge, Robbie Williams mentored the two throughout their time on the show after they became his Golden X choice as a part of the Six Chair Challenge.

They next performed a mash-up of “Back to Life” by Soul II Soul and “Big for Your Boots” by Stormzy. Coined as A-Star, the duo quickly became fan favorites. They placed fourth during the season, losing out to Anthony Russell, Scarlett Lee, and season winner Dalton Harris.

A-Star made it all the way to week 6 of the show, the semi-finals. There they performed “Blinded by Your Grace” by Stormzy and “I Win” by Lethal Bizzle. Three of the four judges voted to send Scarlett Lee through instead of Acacia and Aaliyah, with their mentor Williams the lone holdout, who voted to send them through.
