Wintertime in some states means slippery roads and icy sidewalks. Driving can be treacherous, as can simply walking somewhere.
But the mail must still be delivered and packages have to reach their destination no matter what. One UPS delivery man discovered the hard way just how tough his job can be.
We may whine and complain about our orders not arriving on time, but Walt Gorczowski couldn’t believe what his UPS delivery person did to make sure he still received his package.
The delivery driver was captured on a security camera slipping and sliding in the wintery weather. The video went viral after a stunned Walt uploaded it to his YouTube channel.
Walt explained that his area had recently endured an ice storm and the wet ice on his sloping driveway was “super slippery.” He tried to help out the UPS delivery person but instead was incredibly impressed and in disbelief with what he witnessed.
“I heard the UPS truck pull up so I opened the garage and told him to just leave the package at the sidewalk and I’d figure out a way to get it, but he insisted on getting it to me. Above and beyond… this guy is awesome.”
The UPS man stepped out of his truck and discovered just how insanely slick the driveway was. He managed to maneuver his way up the side of the big brown truck, sliding the box on its end in front of him.
When he made it to the rear end of the truck, he held on for dear life and gingerly sat down on the bumper. He eyed Walt standing at the top of the driveway, lined himself up just so, put his foot on the bumper and shoved hard off the truck.
The box went gliding smoothly up the driveway out of the delivery man’s hands and he went belly flopping right after it. The box safely slid right into Walt’s outstretched arms!
The UPS guy gave Walt a thumbs up and a smile, then rolled over onto his bum and scooted his way down to his truck.
No one expected a delivery driver to go above and beyond like this. The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is incredibly busy, according to UPS.
“Between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2019, we estimate UPS will deliver more than 32 million packages per day in the U.S. and around the world, an increase of 60 percent over our normal daily volume.”
According to Wonolo, FedEx and UPS have a team of meteorologists on staff who forecast the weather up to two weeks in advance to help them reroute and plan for potential problems.
These forecasts also dictate what airport packages are shipped to every day and to swap paths for packages that are carried by truck. In areas where hurricanes have hit in the past, the companies resumed deliveries in just two days afterward.
“The delivery staff drives upward of 200 miles every day, delivering 80 to 100 packages directly to customer’s doors. This requires dedication and commitment, especially when the weather is cold and bordering on dangerous.”
