Spooky ghost stories are probably the BEST part of the first fall months (besides maybe the food)! Telling them, going on ghost tours, and thinking about house decorations are all part of the excitement!
While many people just view those stories as fun, there are usually some really creepy backstories behind all the scary things we hear! As long as we donโt have to live in a haunted house, we are ok with visiting one for a tour or something.
What you may not realize is that there are stories of haunted locations in everyโฆ singleโฆ state.
Letโs go through our favorite picks for the scariest hotels in each state!


1. Alabama
The Redmont Hotel in Alabama has three main โspectersโ that roam the halls. First is the spirit of Hank Williams, a famous country singer. The second is a woman in white that multiple people have seen. The third is Clifford Stiles, a former owner.


2. Alaska
The Anchorage Hotel was built in 1916 and has a LOT of sightings. One of the scariest is the ghost of a former Chief of Police, Jack Sturgus. He was killed right outside the building and he comes back each year to look for the suspect.


3. Florida
The Biltmore Hotel was built in 1926 and was a place that people went to โswingโ (a popular dance). Thomas โFattyโ Walsh was taken to the 13th floor and killed one night, however. It was also used as a military hospital during WWII, so the number of sightings is understandably quite high!


4. Colorado
The Stanely Hotel is so famous for its ghostly halls that Stephen King used it as the basis for a book youโve probably heard of โ he named it The Shining. People even have pictures of ghosts walking down the halls of this hotel.


5. New York
The Shanley Hotel was built in 1895 and is haunted by an entire family! A little boy, 5-year-old Walter Nelson Thayer III, plays in the attic. His dad is said to have been seen around the halls as well.


6. Connecticut
The Yankee Pedlar Inn has quite the name and quite the legend. Itโs been noted that the hotelโs founder has been seen in the room she died in. People have also seen her rocking chair move on its own as she keeps tabs on the hotelโs occupants!


7. California
The Roosevelt Hotel is one of the most famous on the list. This star-studded graveyard boasts people like Marilyn Monroe (Suite 1200) and Montgomery Clift (room 928).


8. Missouri
The Elms Hotel got its spectral visitors when two fires happened in 1898 and 1910. The people trapped inside have since shown themselves to many people, particularly the crew that worked the hotel in 1920.


9. Illinois
The Congress Plaza Hotel has seen its share of ghostly visitors. While some think the appliances turning on and off may just be electrical abnormalities, others know what the real reason is.


10. Hawaii
The aloha state isnโt excluded from the list! The Hilton Hawaiin Village is known for a woman in a red dress walking through the hotel and is an incarnation of the volcano goddess.


11. Iowa
The Hotel Ottumwa sounds actually scary. People say theyโve heard heavy breathing in their rooms, shadows crossing walls, and disembodied voices. People have also seen a woman in a white dress in the basement. Not interested in this one!


12. Delaware
The Addy Sea Inn is on a sandy beach and has three haunted rooms in the building. The bathtub in one shakes with no apparent reason, organ music plays through another, and the final one causes phones to turn on and off for no reason.


13. Maine
The Lucerne Inn is incredibly old (1818) and its stories come from a suicide or slaying that happened. Since then, people have heard voices and seen shadows, as well as a piano playing.


14. Massachusetts
The Hawthorne Hotel is located in Salem โ makes sense, right? There are two rooms that are famously haunted and people claim to have seen a woman creeping through hallways to look into rooms.


15. New Hampshire
The Omni Hotel became haunted after the owner of the hotel died only a year after it was built. Once his wife died, her spirit cried through the halls, looking for him.


16. Arizona
The Jerome Grand Hotel used to be a hospital, a likely place for the stories about it to originate. People have heard voices in the hallways and seen people being pushed away on gurneys.


17. Arkansas
The Crescent Hotel has a terrifying past. It was bought by Norman Baker who claimed he could cure cancer. He only accepted people with no families and forced them to sign letters saying they were cured. He would then drill holes in their heads and pump their skulls with water, corn silk, carbolic acid, and watermelon seeds.


18. Indiana
The Story Inn has quite an interesting specter. The Blue Lady passes through the rooms and leaves blue objects being. Even if you donโt see her, the smell of cherry tobacco always is in her wake.


19. Minnesota
The St. James Hotel houses the former owner, Clara Lillyblad, on the third floor. She will regularly straighten objects and always keeps things nice and tidy.


20. Maryland
The Admiral Fell Inn is home to the spirit of Room 413. There are cold spots that move around the room and thereโs rumor of a ghost that sits at the foot of the bed.


21. Idaho
The Idaho Hotel was christened with a standoff shortly after it was built. Additionally, a former owner ended his life in one of the rooms once he learned he had pancreatic cancer.


22. Louisiana
The Dauphine Orleans Hotel is situated right in New Orleans, a famously haunted city. People have seen Civil War soldiers walking through the courtyard at this hotel.


23. Kansas
The Drury Plaza Hotelโs visitors claim theyโve seen the lights turning on and off in the rooms. Additionally, furniture has rearranged itself without any outside help.


24. Georgia
The Marshall House was built right after the end of the civil war and the bloodshed in the state seems to have seeped into the walls. People have seen military figures and a young soldier asking for help putting his arm back on.


25. Kentucky
The Seelbach Hilton Louisville has a โLady in Blueโ that roams the hallways and especially loves the elevators. A woman took her life in the elevator years ago, the likely source of the ghost.


26. Mississippi
The Cedar Grove Mansion Inn has some strange sightingsโฆ and even some bitings. People have heard noises while in the hotel sounding like children. One visitor even claimed to have been bitten.


27. New Mexico
The Hotel Parq Central was once a psychiatric facility. For many, thatโs enough of a reason to NEVER stay. Visitors have seen voices and others have claimed they have been watched.


28. Michigan
The Landmark Inn has quite a story.
In the 1930s, a librarian fell in love with a crewman on a ship, and they moved into the Landmark. Supposedly, he shipped out one last time, then drowned. The news of his demise so shattered the librarian that she perished in the Lilac Room on the sixth floor. Decades later, in the 1990s, a man was staying in the Lilac Room when he found his sheets full of screws. After asking the housekeepers to change the sheets, he returned only to find the new sheets once again filled with screws.


29. Nevada
The Flamingo Hotel and Casino is a popular image, but itโs also haunted! It was claimed to be visited by the ghost of Benjamin โBugsyโ Siegel and has been seen at the memorial in the hotelโs garden.


30. Vermont
The Black Lantern Inn is one of the oldest on our list, making sense that itโs such a haunted spot. A ghost in room 3 will regularly turn off the shower at strange times!


31. South Dakota
The Hotel Alex Johnson has a โLady in Whiteโ that killed herself when she jumped from 812 in her wedding gown. Additionally, people sometimes see the former owner, Alex Johnson in the foyer.


32. Washington
The Mayflower Park Hotel is home to a few ghosts. Some even like to speak to the guests! Visitors have heard voices calling โhelloโ to them and others say they feel like theyโre being watched.


33. Oregon
The Geiser Grand Hotel has its own โBlue Ladyโ, an apparition in a blue nightgown that goes up and down the staircases and is sometimes seen by visitors.


34. North Dakota
The Rough Riders Hotel has an apparition of a little boy who plays around the buildings. People who havenโt seen him claim to have heard him (I donโt know which is worse)!


35. Oklahoma
The Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City comes with a story. Locals think that a maid had an affair with the owner and shortly jumped to her death with their illegitimate baby. Visitors claim to have seen the maid and heard the baby screaming.


36. North Carolina
The Green Park Inn Hotel in Blowing Rock, NC, is home to a spirit in room 318. Locals believe she killed herself after she was dumped on her wedding day and now she just messes with electronics in the room!


37. Nebraska
The Argo Hotel has some interesting apparitions. People claim to have felt cold spots through the building as well as seeing pictures move of their own volition.


38. West Virgina
Visitors to the Clarion Hotel Morgan in Morgantown have claimed to felt cold spots and heard very strange noises. A girl who drowned in a bathtub in Room 214 also haunts the room and people claim to feel gloomy whenever they are in the bathroom.


39. Virgina
The Martha Washington Inn has lots of spirits and ghosts. Apparently, thereโs a tunnel under the hotel that houses a terrifying spirit that is set on destruction.


40. New Jersey
The Union Hotel is one of the most physical on the list. People have heard strange voices and some have even claimed to have been pushed around.
โI could feel the pressure of it right up against me, pushing on my chest. It was making it hard for me to breathe. I didnโt feel threatened. I simply asked it to move away and leave me alone. Then it was gone.โ


41. Rhode Island
The Newport Beach Hotel has an ensemble routine with its spirits! They are known to bang pots, pans, and cutlery together at night and some workers claim to have had their tools rearranged.


42. Tennessee
The Peabody Hotel is famous for ducks walking through the lobby, but the 11th floor has something a bit more paranormal. A spirit wanders on the 11th floor and cold spots follow in its wake.


43. South Carolina
The Pelican Inn has been around long enough to gather its fair share of ghosts. The Inn has a โgray manโ who walks along the beach and sometimes comes into the hotel.


44. Texas
A horrific murder happened in Room 636 back in 1965 and the hotel has never been the same. Visitors have heard noises coming from the room, even when itโs vacant.


45. Utah
This Holiday Inn Express in Utah is somewhat new, but it has an older history as the Shiloh Inn. A woman killed he children by throwing them out a window and then herself out after. People have heard kids at the pool when there are none, among other strange things.


46. Ohio
The Hotel Cincinnati Netherland Plaza has a โLady in Greenโ that floats around. She has been seen by visitors and construction workers and is often accompanied by floating green orbs.


47. Wisconsin
The Karsten Hotel was built in 1912 and is haunted by its late housekeeper, Agatha. She is joined by the former owner, William Karsten Sr., who can be found wandering as well. During a scene in an ABC paranormal show, one of their camera tripods was thrown across the room.


48. Montana
The Grand Union Hotel is in one of the oldest cities in the state, Fort Benton. Visitors have seen blue lights in room 202, as well as a man in a strange long coat walking the hallways.


49. Wyoming
The Old Faithful Inn is in the middle of Yellowstone National Park and you wouldnโt think it would be haunted! Still, it has some of the highest levels of paranormal activity around. Doors open and close, and the ghost of a headless bride has been seen in the halls.


50. Pennsylvania
Hotel Bethlehem may have a biblical name, but it has some serious specters. Thankfully, the staff claims they are all friendly! People claim to have been woken up and asked why they are sleeping in the wrong bed!
