Country musician Rory Feek has been an open book when it comes to his life, including as a single father. In an interview on Rachael Ray’s talk show, he revealed a memory about his late wife Joey that’s leaving people in tears.

The world fell in love with Joey+Rory back in 2008 when they first appeared on the CMT show, Can You Duet. The husband and wife bluegrass team were from Tennessee – and together their talents blew everyone away.

For years the two traveled the globe creating music and pursuing their dreams. However, they reached a point where they desired a more simple life.

In 2014, Rory and Joey decided to take a year off to concentrate on their family, residing on their farm in Nashville where they shared glimpses into their lives through a blog. Not only did they have two daughters from Rory’s previous relationship, but also a new baby girl on the way.

Life was beautiful welcoming baby Indiana into the world. But soon, it all came crashing down.

Joey was given the news that changed their lives forever. Rory stayed by his wife’s side the entire time.

Rory shared,

“I never thought that we would be here. We never did, we never stopped believing that it could change at any moment.”

The couple tried to stay positive while also enjoying their new daughter Indiana. Sadly though, according to People, Joey was given the news she only a short time to live.

Rory suddenly became the single father of three daughters. While heartbroken, he also found a way to stay positive throughout it all.

He explained:

“God gave us a great story. He could have ended it differently. He could have – it would have been a miracle. But instead, he chose another miracle. He was going to take her little story and share it.”

Rory continues to share the beauty of their lives through the family’s blog (This Life I Live), books, and also in interviews.

To Rory, he’s doing what Joey would have wanted him to do.

“I told her in November when we got home from the hospital, I said, ‘I wish it was me, I’ve lived a great life.’ She said, ‘But if it was you, there would be nobody to write about it.’ So I live it, and you write it, and we did. She will not stop living.”

The Feeks story has continued to pull on heartstrings – especially when Rory reveals information about how strong, selfless, and incredible his late wife Joey was. While visiting the Rachael Ray show, he shared an intimate detail about what occurred before she passed.

As a mom in her situation, many would think Joey would have spent as much time as possible creating a bond with her young daughter Indiana. However, she decided to think of Rory and the baby’s future instead.

The musician shared,

“In the last few months, she told me, ‘I’m going to push the baby away (who was two) and make you greater…greater in her life.'”

Rory couldn’t help but get choked up explaining his wife’s thoughtful reasoning behind it. She wanted to make the transition smooth for her husband, who was about to become a single parent

He admitted,

“I wouldn’t have done that. I think I would have said, ‘You get forever with her – I want all of it right now.’ But she had an understanding of a bigger picture.”
