Having children is not cheap by any means, just daycare alone can be extremely expensive. While some people are lucky enough to have family members that will help watch their kids, others have no choice to figure it out and fork up a mini-fortune for childcare. That’s exactly why the Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, started bringing his baby to work!

Mayor in Rhode Island says heck no to outrages childcare costs, he brings his baby to work instead!

Jorge Elorza is the Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, who was faced with a problem many parents face every day. Mayor Elorza and wife, Stephanie, recently welcomed a son named, Omar, into the world, but when it came time for childcare they couldn’t believe how expensive it was!

“We went to see a daycare center, and both Stephanie and I fell in love with the place. Then, in the end, they passed us the brochure and it was $395 a week. We looked at each other and we’re like ‘I guess not.'” The Mayor told Today.

After realizing childcare would cost an astounding $19,000 per year, they had no choice but to find another way. So the Mayor brings his son to work some days!

Luckily Omar’s grandparents help them with most of the childcare, there are occasions when they can’t, that is when the little guy gets to play Mayor right alongside his dad.

Baby Omar gets to join his father on news conferences, mayoral meetings and even while testifying in the State House! The Mayor’s wife, Stephanie Gonzalez, had reservations about Baby Omar going to work with the Mayor, but also thinks it can be good for him.

“I worried about what people might say, and certainly there are nay-sayers about whether he should be coming to City Hall or whether he should be present at meetings,” Stephanie said on the Today show. She went on to say: “It’s an opportunity for him to learn that his parents are busy people, but also that his parents are people that are doing very important work.”

Although the Mayor tries not to bring his baby to work during the week, sometimes he has no choice.

Mayor Elorza understands why some people may think bringing your kid to the office is counterproductive, so he does his best not to bring Omar to work Monday-Friday, there is the occasional pinch where he has no choice. In that case, there is a big basket of toys to keep the little guy entertained.

Mayor Elorza is not the only public official bringing his baby to work, Washington DC’s Mayor also brings her baby to work!

Mayor Elorza isn’t alone, the Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, also brings her baby to some events. Illinois Senator, Tammy Duckworth, also took her 10-month old baby to the Senate floor to cast a vote last year! Kudos to them, who doesn’t love babies!?
