In 2008, artist Michael Jackson released his hit song “Billie Jean,” a tune about a fictitious girl who believed he was the father of her child. In interviews conducted at the time the song was released, Jackson claimed the lyrics were based on groupies’ claims about his older brothers when he toured with them as the hit group Jackson 5.
The song with a killer beat ended up winning a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Single, American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Video and a Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
In fact, Jackson’s performance of “Billie Jean” on the TV special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever introduced the world to several of Jackson’s signature moves like the moonwalk, and to his trademark white sequinned glove.
Countless people have imitated Jackson’s “Billie Jean” routine over the years, including three hilarious senior citizens residing at Leisure World, a gated retirement community located in Seal Beach, Calif. They call themselves The Awesome Threesome and all are older than 70, but you would never guess it.
Age truly doesn’t matter for this cool trio.
They defy all stereotypes affiliated with senior citizens. But they capitalize on those very stereotypes as they begin their talent show routine and shock everyone once the music shifts beats.
The trio happens to be dressed in white v-neck T-shirts and black pants matched to white socks and shiny black shoes. They hobble out across the stage, hands pressed upon their aching backs as they bend over and shuffle their way over to three folding chairs. It’s clearly difficult walking for them, much like it is for many seniors.
Perched on the chairs they’re making their way over to sits black hats with sequined bands. They pick up their stiff legs to assume a starting position to some very dramatic music, and turn their backs to the crowd and face the chairs.
As the music morphs into something airly and light, the trio slowly places the hats on their heads and thrust their right hands up into the air. That’s when everyone can see it — the sequined glove.
Everyone begins to piece it all together: the sequined glove, the black hat with the sequined band, the black and white outfit. Their suspicions are confirmed as the familiar introductory beat to “Billie Jean” begins to play.
These awesome senior citizens switch to a different gear and begin to show off their impressive dance moves. They toss out several pelvic thrusts that have the audience cracking up. They execute a grapevine, some more pelvic thrusts and a shocking grab of their nether regions that has one man in the crowd guffawing.
The seniors attempt to moonwalk and the crowd cheers and claps for them.
It isn’t an easy move and it’s one many people have tried to imitate in the past. They shout “yow” and kick in front of them like Jackson used to do, punching the sky with each move. At the end of their routine, they toss their hats into the crowd and the audience goes wild.
The seniors take a couple of polite bows then hilariously hobble off the stage holding their aching backs. This trio of dancers is just too funny! See for yourself how animated and talented they are in the video below. You’ll be laughing right along with the audience.
