When McDonald’s worker Rebecca Grace took the stage on X Factor UK back in 2017, the crowd looked on in anticipation.
No one knew what to expect. It’s not too often that a person in the service industry makes it in front of an audience so large. For that reason alone, she must be something special, the judges surely thought.
“I am so nervous,” Rebecca said as she stepped onto the stage.
Judge Simon Cowell was quick to respond.
“I’ve been like that all day,” Cowell joked.
It turns out, earlier in the day, producers had made all the X Factor judges go for a ride on the “Ghost Train”, a virtual reality horror ride at the Thorpe Park Resort located in Surrey, UK. It is supposedly a very frightening experience.
However, Rebecca did indeed have plenty of reason to be nervous.
After all, she was only 20 years old and it was one of the first times she had sung for a big group of people. Now, all the cameras were on her and the whole world was watching.
When Rebecca stated that she worked at McDonald’s, Cowell dug in for more details.
“So this is not what you planned, singing is your passion, yeah?” Cowell asked.
Rebecca confirmed as much and stated she was going to sing Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece” for them.
The music started and as soon as Rebecca began to sing, all the judges were instantly mesmerized.
The pure emotion was evident in Rebecca’s voice and any doubt that they once had quickly faded away.
“But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me,” Rebecca sang.
The video flashes to Rebecca’s family who are all looking on as well, taking in the performance and hoping for the best.
Her mom, dad, sister, and partner had all come along to witness the event.
“Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and the father should be great”
The song ends and everyone bursts into applause.
The judges and audience alike are all noticeably moved. It really is a special moment.
“Rebecca, that was the perfect song for your voice and you sung it effortlessly because it is a very emotional song. It is a huge song and you just did it. Do you not realize how good you are?” judge Louie Walsh commented.
This season of X Factor UK featured a number of individuals looking to change their lives.
Among those individuals was Rebecca Grace.
While judges eventually chose to let her go a few episodes later, at the very least, Rebecca’s beautiful performance that day cemented her spot in the hearts of millions.
Everyone thought it was a big error on the judges’ parts when she was voted off. If one thing is for sure, it is that she will likely never have to go back to her old job at McDonald’s again. She is just way too talented to for that.
