Reality TV viewers love drama. But life can only be so dramatic.
When it comes to reality TV, there’s something for everybody – from cooking, to relationships, and even celebrity home life.
Writers and producers spend a lot of time bringing these shows to life., which means they also plan everything from the get-go.
Here are some TV shows that are more scripted than they let on:
1. Duck Dynasty
The characters also find themselves in situations written by producers with “bleeps” inserted for added effect, even though they’re not even swearing.
2. Pawn Stars
Before filming begins, any item to be sold to the shop is cleaned and vetted. Then the customer signs a consent form.
Rick also always has a friend who is an expert on the item at hand. Surprised?
3. House Hunters
Those other houses are just there for viewing pleasure, and most of the interactions are staged.
We feel cheated!
4. Jersey Shore
Nicole LaValle wasn’t even known as “Snooki” up until a friend suggested it as a joke and it stuck.
Honestly, we’re not surprised at all by this.
5. Long Island Medium
While there have been a lot of psychics on TV, this one is pure scripted entertainment.
6. Mountain Men
Even those supposedly dangerous situations are arranged and scripted.
7. Keeping Up with the Kardashians
Then you’ve got marriage proposals that were staged…etc. Is anything about these folks even real?
8. Catfish
Then the hosts pretend to seek out the truth.
They’re all playing a role.
9. American Pickers
The locations are found by the producers who send investigators to do some searching a month before filming.
And “Hobo Jack,” (Jack Sophir) isn’t a hobo. The man is a collector with multiple buildings.
10. Cake Boss
No one is willing to pay so much for a cake that they’ve never seen.
Still, it’s impressive to watch these creations come to life.
11. The Biggest Loser
There are also rumors that the medical staff aren’t properly credentialed.
12. Deadliest Catch
The TV fishing crews make money from producers allowing them to price out the regular fishermen making it harder for others to make a living. Not to mention they edit storylines to make situations so much worse on TV.
13. Storage Wars
David Hester, called “The Mogul,” claimed producers planted valuable items to make it appear that the lockers contained real valuable stuff.
They reached a settlement but no one admitted nor denied the accusations.
14. Bachelor In Paradise
They spill everything in front of the camera where the editors can pick and choose the juiciest bits before turning these stories to their advantage for the sake of drama on screen.
15. Ice Road Truckers
Cast members also admit to the show being scripted, with characters purposefully portrayed as good and bad for the screen.
We’re disappointed!
16. The Bachelor
Dramatic storylines and scripts have producers picking who ends up where, with each scene carefully written for the short-term, not the long-run.
17. Property Brothers
Even clients act as if they already have a home under contract before appearing on the show.
18. American Idol
The singing is real though!
19. Breaking Amish
Another Amish couple was found to have already been divorced.
None of the “stars” were devout Amish who wanted to leave their ways and explore the big city.
20. RuPaul’s Drag Race
He went on to claim that producers would goad him and other contestants into saying ridiculous things before editing to make it seem like he and the other contestants had drama going on.
21. The Voice
Low Cut Connie revealed that he was approached to compete on the show as the producers had already scouted him. The show even asked him to do very specific songs in his style for his audition.
22. MasterChef USA
Producers would splice in bits of dialogue to spice things up a bit and contestants were at the mercy of the writing and editing teams.
23. Jersey Shore: Family Vacation
All the drama and surprises on the show were set up and rehearsed.
24. Total Divas
The drama behind the women’s personal lives was written just like their wrestling storylines, even playing into their WWE timelines.
25. Total Bellas
Everything is pre-planned and written for the sake of entertainment.
26. Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica
But she eventually revealed that they just had fun with the show until she and Nick began having marital problems.
27. The Osbournes
The family and producers planned everything ahead of time before shooting.
28. Bar Rescue
Except events are staged to make restaurants look worse than they actually are.
Most of the bars and restaurants also go back to their old names and decorations after filming.
29. Judge Judy
Sure, she’d listen to the case including the defendant and plaintiff, but the actual cases were already ruled on before the show even began.
Judy Sheindlin’s actions were all for entertainment.
30. Alaskan Bush People
But the Brown’s neighbors shared that the family were residents at the Icy Strait Lodge in Hoonah, Alaska.
Others came forward to say that the home used was strictly for filming too. They weren’t exactly what the show claimed they were.
So, are you surprised at how little “reality” you can find in reality TV?
