When a 25-year-old pregnant woman took the spotlight to audition on The X Factor Ukraine, the judges stared curiously at her. She certainly wasnโt your typical contestant.
But as they say, donโt judge a book by its cover. Little did they know she was about to blow everyone away.
It takes a lot of courage to get on the stage of a reality TV talent show, especially knowing youโre being evaluated in front of the world. While The Voice provides blind auditions to ensure contestants are judged on their abilities and not their appearances โ on other programs, the judges actually watch the performances.
At the beginning of the mother-to-beโs audition, there were a couple of funny looks coming from the panel. One came after the music to Whitney Houstonโs classic, โI Have Nothing,โ began to play.
Making such a bold song choice happens all the time. However, if a contestant is going to take on a big hit like the woman was โ they better be ready to rock it.
The crowd sat silently as the expectant mom started her performance. She had a stunning voice that filled the room. Yet, it was difficult to tell what exactly the judges were thinkingโฆ
โI Have Nothingโ is a ballad written by David Foster and Linda Thompson for the 1992 film, The Bodyguard (which starred Whitney Houston). When performed well, itโs a song that leaves you in goosebumps.
As it turns out, the pregnant woman was an amazing singer with an ability to handle the song. She belted out the lyrics beautifully, even taking on the high notes.
Finally, the judgesโ reactions became quite clearโฆ They thought she was incredible too! The female judge seemed especially excited while watching the performance.
Not only was it very brave of the woman to audition all together, but singing while so far along (in pregnancy) isnโt the easiest task for everyone (especially when it comes to high notes).
The New York Times reported in an article:
โGrowing babies crowd the lungs and diaphragm, and the flood of estrogen and other hormones that comes with pregnancy can make vocal cords swell and vibrate differently. More effort is necessary, too. Expectant women have to exhale with added force to get vocal cords to vibrate and get the sound out.โ
Even if it was more difficult for the contestant โ it didnโt affect the outcome. She nailed her audition and proved to the judges she deserved to be on The X Factor Ukraine stage.
A man watching behind the curtains (likely her significant other) seemed so moved he actually had tears in his eyes. In fact, the female judge too couldnโt control herself. After the woman finished singing, she felt compelled to give her a big hug.
Itโs an unforgettable performance that went viral. As of now, itโs been viewed more than 12 million times.
People from all across the globe have been showering the pregnant woman with compliments. One wrote:
โHer accent was lovely and she made the song her own. Itโs not easy folks, to sing with added weight and probably short of oxygen due to the pregnancy. Wonderfully done!!!!!โฆBravo!!!!!โ
