Though some say the young are too immature to know of love, Matt Grodsky knew he loved Laura Scheel. And 20 years later, he still does.
He was only 3-years-old when he declared his love for her in front of his entire preschool class, telling them that he would marry her one day.
“One of my very first memories is of being 3-years-old and standing up in front of my pre-school class, declaring that I would marry her someday,” he said in an Instagram post.
They hit it off from the start and would have playdates, watch movies, and share life lessons. Scheel even taught Grodsky how to draw, the right way to eat string cheese and how to swing.
Basically, they were obsessed with each other.
“I don’t remember the first time I saw her, but she was always a girl who let me follow her around,” Grodsky told TODAY. “I’d always try to impress her by reciting lines from movies like ‘The Lion King’ and stuff like that.”
They loved to play hide-and-go-seek and chase each other on the playground. When it was naptime, they would stay awake and spend that time together.
“I was enaoured with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day,” Grodsky said on social media.
The pair lost touch over the years when they entered elementary school and the only time Grodsky ever got to see his love was on her family’s annual Christmas card.
They finally reconnected in high school by happenstance through a mutual friend and were inseparable ever since.
“Within two weeks we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend,” Grodsky explained. “We continued to date throughout all of High School, even though we went to different school.”
The two lovebirds even continued their relationship via long-distance when they went to college in different states.
Grodsky, however, couldn’t wait until they graduated to make good on his pre-school promise.
“We remained a resilient couple until May 23, 2015 when I decided to stay true to my preschool pledge and make Laura my wife,” Grodsky explained. “I proposed to her at the place it all began… our preschool classroom.”
According to TODAY, Grodsky bought the ring two months in advance and asked for her father’s blessing.
“I was like ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?'” Scheel told TODAY. “I saw the ring and was like ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.'”
The couple was married on December 30, 2016.
“For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats but for them, it was about finding their soulmates,” Grodsky’s uncle said.
