During the 25th anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera, fans were gifted a breathtaking performance. Even the Broadway musical’s composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, was there to witness the event.
But interestingly enough, it was the unexpected singer behind the performance that turned out to be most stunning of all.
The Phantom of the Opera has been gathering fans since 1986 when it first opened in London. Since then, it’s won prestigious awards and has been honored for its long history on Broadway.
Lloyd Webber has also composed other famous musicals that are known worldwide. Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar are just a few of the recognizable names of many.
In celebration of The Phantom of the Opera‘s milestone, Lloyd Webber took the stage at the Royal Variety Performance. He explained to the crowd how the upcoming act would be a little unique because of who would be playing the role of Christine Daaé.
“One of the great, great delights about working in musical theater is you get to work with artists – and you get to work with artists who sometimes you say, ‘god, they’re not going to be able to achieve this,’ and ‘they’re going to do something completely out of their own comfort zone.’ And tonight, you’re going to see just such a thing.”
Popstar, Nicole Scherzinger, was set to take on the character of Christine. She’s a musical artist who lept into stardom as the main singer of The Pussycat Dolls – a group known for their R&B dance tracks.
On the other end of the stage in the role of “Phantom” would be four separate gentlemen, all of which had played the character over the years. Everyone was surely curious about what they were about to witness.

When the curtain finally rose, Scherzinger could be seen surrounded by the Phantoms. The eerie music of the song “The Phantom of the Opera” began to play, which is an iconic duet shared between the two main characters.
Scherzinger belted out the lyrics:
“In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came. That voice which calls to me – and speaks my name.”
From the moment her voice boomed through the auditorium it became clear Scherzinger was a versatile singer. She sounded just like a Broadway star.
As she continued with the lyrics, the performance got more and more chilling.
“And do I dream again? For now I find – the phantom of the opera is there, inside my mind.”
The male vocalists then took turns singing to “Christine” – the woman of the Phantom’s obsession. The act is alluring and even Scherzinger’s facial expressions are mesmerizing to watch.
But as the end of the performance draws near, the pop star takes her vocal abilities to a whole other level. She proves to everyone that her musical talents are truly out of this world.
After their rendition of “The Phantom of the Opera” was posted on YouTube, even viewers were left awestruck by what they heard. One person commented:
“Unbelievable! Nicole Scherzinger just blew my mind with that performance of the main theme of The Phantom of the Opera! She is a talented singer indeed!”
Another person wrote:
“Jaw on the floor, had NO idea she could sing like that, wow, great performance, Brava!!!”
