If there is one way to work your way into Simon Cowell’s heart, it’s by performing on America’s Got Talent with a dog or two.
Or nine, if you’re a member of the Dominguez family.
Walking onstage in their glittery costumes, the family of four — including husband Jorge, wife Alcira, and their children Makayla and Logan — led nine dogs. Eight of them were poodles, while the ninth was a terrier, a rescue from an animal shelter in their hometown of Dallas.
Daughter Makayla immediately drew a chorus of “Awes”, dressed in a pink poodle suit.
All of the judges were immediately smitten, including Simon Cowell. While Cowell is known for his bad-tempered attitude toward people, he’s notoriously fond of dogs.
Jorge introduced himself and his family and explained a little bit about what they do in their act. He was also quick to say their dogs are highly unique and each has its own personality.
“The brown one over there, Mickey, he is the alpha,” said Jorge.
The audience had a laugh before the act even began when one of the dogs jumped down from its place on the pedestal.
Seeing it, little Makayla ran over to put it back in its place. But there was no need. Seeing the little girl coming over, the dog immediately hopped obediently back up on the pedestal. It was clear the kids were highly confident with the animals, and that the dogs knew who was boss.
Jorge explained that he and his family currently don’t have a home. Instead, they live in an RV and travel around the United States, performing at fairgrounds and other venues. If they win America’s Got Talent — which includes a grand prize of $1 million — they want to buy a house and settle down permanently.
The house, of course, will need room not just for the humans of the Dominguez family, but also all nine dogs.
“The dogs are more than just pets, they are parts of the family,” said Jorge.
They had already won everyone’s hearts before their act began. But of course, the act itself only made things better.
It started out with one of the poodles doing a couple of jumps over a flag. Then the smallest poodle of the bunch came forward to perform a little dance with Alcira. The act also included one dog taking three hurdles at once. All the judges were grinning from ear to ear, including Cowell.
Another unexpectedly charming part of the act was the Dominguez’ son Logan.
He performed some impressive gymnastics, flipping across the stage and sticking his landing with a huge smile. He also did a handstand, with one of the dogs jumping up over his legs. Logan performed all his moves with confidence, clearly loving the spotlight. He ended his routine with a quick dab, making the judges laugh.
As the big closing to their act, the smallest dog performed a handstand mid-air, standing on Jorge’s hand.
One thing is clear: the Dominguez poodle performance captured everyone’s heart the moment they stepped onto the stage.
