What do you do when you’re going about your day and you happen to see your idol in person right in front of you?

You’ll either scream, faint, get shy, or run up to them and hug them, right? Or if they have people with them, maybe you’ll go up to them to ask for an autograph or a photo with them.

Well, it happened to this police dog.

The police department was at a New York metro station to host a meet-and-greet with the people. The police also had their K-9 dogs with them to introduce to the public.

And guess who else was there? McGruff the Crime Dog!

McGruff the Crime Dog first appeared in 1980 through television and radio ads, billboards, and posters to help raise awareness in crime prevention. These ads informed citizens on how to help prevent crime through personal steps, community awareness, and how to report crimes in progress.

Today, McGruff the Crime Dog is still used during the outreach programs of the police department.

It works every time because McGruff can easily reach out to and get the attention of the kids. The kids gravitate towards McGruff and they listen to everything he says as well as the other police officers.

Well, there’s one more fan who can’t get enough of McGruff when he saw him at a police outreach program.

This K-9 cop dog was doing his job when he saw McGruff. He ran to McGruff and jumped to hug him. McGruff bent down to hug the dog back, who was wagging his tail so excitedly.

From 1980 to 2018, McGruff the Crime Dog appeared in the media to give friendly advice on crime prevention. In 1980, his first TV appearance was “Stop A Crime”.

In this ad, McGruff entered an unlocked house and told viewers, “All crime needs is a chance. Don’t give it a chance.”

The National Crime Prevention Council also enlisted the help of McGruff to address serious issues, including abduction, drugs, and gun violence. And they even set up a McGruff program in 1982 to enlist safe houses for children who have emergency needs. In 1986, they further expanded the program to McGruff trucks to serve as “rolling McGruff houses”.

Active media campaigns and the McGruff program ended in 2012 when more and more people started using cellphones a lot and budget got too tight.

But McGruff public appearances with the police departments in the different US cities continued.

Greg Padden was just passing through this station when he saw this adorable scene. He took a quick video of the K-9 cop dog jumping all over McGruff the Crime Dog and posted it on Instagram.

Everyone around the area loved seeing the cop dog getting all excited.

They kept gushing, giggling and laughing at the scene in front of them. Even his fellow cops had smiles on their faces and just watched and let them be.

The cops tried to go back to work and were pulling their police dog to go with them. But he wouldn’t leave. Instead, he jumped on McGruff again and hugged him.

McGruff couldn’t resist and had to hug him back every time.
