Princess is a cheerful 14-year-old pig living at Arthurโs Acres Sanctuary, a haven for farm animals to live peacefully.
However, Princessโs journey to this sanctuary was far from happy.
Her life before the sanctuary was filled with hardship and suffering.
Before her rescue, Princess endured a grim existence on a factory farm.
She was confined to a dark stall, where she was repeatedly bred.
This was her life for a decade without a glimpse of sunshine, a sadly common scenario for animals on factory farms.
Sadly, many pigs donโt get the beautiful existence they deserve.
โPigs are gentle, intelligent animals with complex personalities. However, when born to a life on a factory farm, they donโt get to exhibit their natural behaviors. Instead, they are subject to countless forms of neglect,โ writes The Humane League.
One Green Planet reports that these farms often house up to 10,000 pigs in cramped gestation crates, barely larger than the pigs themselves.
Princessโs existence was a nameless one, living in darkness and loneliness.
Her constant breeding drove her to the brink of madness.
She had been kept in such conditions for so long that she went blind, able only to see shadows.
Caitlin Cimini of Rancho Relaxo, a sanctuary for animals, pleaded with her owner for six years to surrender Princess.
โShe has never been outside. She has never been given a name. She has never been given a treat. She has never been loved,โ Caitlin expressed on Instagram.
After a tragic incident where Princess killed her own babies, the farmer finally conceded, realizing he could no longer profit from her.
Caitlin kept Princessโs one surviving piglet, Pistachio, and Princess was transferred to Todd at Arthurโs Acres.
Upon arrival at Arthurโs Acres, Princess was terrified and bewildered, refusing to let anyone approach her.
Toddโs first gesture was to make her a huge fruit and veggie salad, probably the first sweet and pleasant thing she had ever tasted.
With Toddโs gentle care and persistence, Princess slowly began to come around.
Todd provided treats and kept her separated from other animals and humans to avoid overwhelming her.
He named her Princess, believing she deserved happiness and comfort.
Todd devoted hours each day to Princess, ensuring she felt safe and could get used to his presence.
Eventually, Princess began to trust Todd.
She allowed him to hand-feed her, then pet her, and even give her belly rubs.
Getting accustomed to Todd, Princess then experienced playing outside for probably the first time, enjoying the grass under her feet.
It didnโt take long for Princess to start making friends with the other animals on the farm.
With abundant love and care, she flourished.
Despite her blindness, Princess now confidently roams the farm, living her best life.
