Boogie-woogie is a music genre developed and popularized by African-American communities sometime in the 1870s. It reached popularity in the late 1920s. As the years went by, the boogie-woogie became incorporated in other music styles and by the early 1950s, the fad went away. These days, Boogie-woogie can still be heard on records and in clubs. This is one good reason why a lot of people are unfamiliar with the music genre.
Brendan Kavanagh specializes and promotes the boogie-woogie.
In one of his gigs, he pretended to be an amateur on the piano. Wearing a black jacket with the hood on and a pair of black sunglasses, he acted like he’s nervous about playing the instrument.
As two moms approached him, he said:
“I get very nervous when people watch me. I’m trying to get over my performance anxiety.”
Then, he acted as if he didn’t know where the middle C was.
The moms were helpful as they encouraged the kids to help Brendan. They were quite patient in helping him find the right key. After teaching Brendan, he asked the girls if they know boogie-woogie. And just like the kids, the moms were not aware of what the genre was or how it sounds.
When Brendan played the first few notes of his song, the kids were stunned.
The man who they thought can’t play the piano or even find the middle C suddenly showed great piano skills. They looked quite confused at first.
As Brendan went on, the girls started smiling and giggling at how fun the song was. Both moms looked amazed, too.
They were whispering to each other about how awesome Brendan was. At one point, they had to ask the girls to keep quiet and listen to Brendan play. They even took out their phones to record his performance!
Brendan played another song.
This time, it was a song the moms were familiar with. They grew up in Turkey so he played a song they can recognize easily. And just like the first song, the moms were entertained.
Brendan’s solo performance wasn’t the best part.
He asked the girls to play the piano with him. One of them obliged and showed great potential. It was mesmerizing to see a little girl play that well with someone like Brendan.
Brendan Kavanagh is also known as Dr K.
He’s a contemporary British pianist who performs regularly on public pianos. Sometimes, he asks passersby and friends to play with him.
Brendan owns a Youtube channel where he shows his performances in public and even at his home. He has caught the interest of so many people and his channel has gained more than 1 million subscribers.
The moms aren’t the only ones who were shocked to see him play boogie-woogie for the first time. A UPS driver, a health and safety employee, and some school kids had the same reaction when they saw him play in public piano. All of their reactions can be seen on Brendan’s videos.
