We always have something to say but sometimes we forgot to think throughly before opening our mouth. Let’s tackle one by one the phrases that we commonly used but rarely meant.
1.”I’m just thinking out loud …
Because of this, Jeff Bezos is known for making attendees of meetings read documents. He requests thoughtful responses, thoughtful suggestions, and thoughtful ideas. Keep your thoughts to yourself. First, think things through.
2. “No, it’s fine.”
No, it’s not fine, but I don’t want to talk about it any longer, is what “No, it’s fine” really implies. That is why it is important to be honest with the person you are talking to.
3. “Cycling this back to the top of your inbox … “
Be direct in asking for what you need in your email. Keep in mind that original email is better to explain than with another email asking for a follow up. Which we will tackle in the next slide. Click next.
4. “Just following up … “
Take a look at the first email you wrote. Most likely, it was motivated by benefits for you. So, make sure to be more creative in your first communication. Find a way to benefit them.
5. “It’s not about the money.”
Never forget that having money as your main motivation is perfectly acceptable. There’s nothing wrong if you are telling the truth about it because money is part of our needs.
6. “That sounds great. I’ll let you know!”
If you will use this phrase, make sure to do it. Don’t let other people down.
7. “I’m a giver.”
You don’t have to say it. Because people can tell if you are giver or not.
8. “Let me be honest.”
Just say it if you have to say something tough. If you truly shouldn’t say something, don’t say it. Don’t try to get away with saying something you shouldn’t.
9. “With all due respect … “
With all due respect suggests that you believe the other person is mistaken. Still, the best way to show respect is to be direct and honest.
10. “Pursuant to your instructions … “
To make a point and to clearly communicate to someone, don’t say this phrase. You can say
11. “Of course I won’t tell anyone”
This phrase literally means that “I want to share this but please keep it a secret.” There’s nothing wrong here but instead of telling to someone not to share to anyone, it is better to be clearer about your intention why you still want to share the information.
12. Say what you mean.
There you have it, the phrases that we always say yet we can do better than that. Remember that better communication is key in every workplace and home.
