Every day, people die in different ways. Some bodies remain undiscovered for years due to isolation, intentional concealment, or natural hiding spots. Whether in an ancient tomb or a chimney, here are stories of bodies found years after death.
27 Boys Buried in Storage Locker


In 1973, police discovered 27 bodies of boys in a rented storage locker after the crimes of Houston serial killer Dean Corll, also known as “The Candy Man.” Corll had hired two teens, David Brooks and Elmer Henley, to assist him in abducting, torturing, and murdering local teenage boys.
After numerous deaths, the accomplices confessed their involvement in Corll’s crimes. Henley, who killed Corll, aided Houston police in identifying most of the bodies found.
Mother and Daughter Discovered In Collapsing House
In 2013, responding to safety concerns about a home in England, police found the bodies of Caroline Jessett, 50, and her mother, Pauline, 78. Caroline’s body was discovered a week before her mother’s, who was found mummified in the bathroom. Medical examiners couldn’t determine the cause of death for either woman but suspected natural causes.
Caroline, who was reclusive and had mental health issues, had been dead for some time. Pauline, also reclusive, may have been dead for a year, although neighbors hadn’t seen her for decades.


Twin Skeletons in Chattanooga
In 2014, Chattanooga Police found the skeletons of twin brothers Andrew and Anthony Johnson in their former home. The reclusive brothers, aged 63, were discovered in matching armchairs. Medical examiners determined that they died of natural causes around three years earlier – Anthony from heart disease and Andrew from diabetes shortly after.
Neighbors viewed the twins as eccentric and didn’t notice their absence. Their sister attempted to check on them in 2011 but couldn’t get into the house.


Body Behind False Wall
In 2013, a construction worker accidentally unearthed the remains of Joann Nichols, 55, hidden behind a “false wall” in the basement of her former home in Poughkeepsie, New York. Joann’s husband, James, had reported her missing in 1985. The medical examiner determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma:
“The body was skeletonized, with the hands tied with rope, and a large area of the right side of the skull missing.”
Investigators suspected James of Joann’s murder, but he had passed away shortly before his wife’s remains were discovered.


Husband’s Body Found 18 Years After His Death
Reportedly, in 1969, John and Leigh Ann Sabine abandoned their five children in New Zealand and fled to Australia under false names. When they returned to New Zealand in 1984 to visit their children, the daughters reported them to the police. The couple then moved to South Wales.
Leigh Ann passed away in 2015 from cancer. John had not been seen since 1997. After Leigh Ann’s death, authorities found John’s remains in her garden in Beddau, wrapped in plastic sheets. Detectives determined his injuries were consistent with an assault, and the cause of death was blunt force trauma. Welsh authorities considered Leigh Ann, who was deceased, as the primary suspect.


Man Found Hanging After Eight Years
In 2013, a new tenant in a Bussy-Saint-Georges building discovered the body of Thomas Ngin. Authorities determined that Ngin, originally from Cambodia, had died eight years earlier in the apartment. Medical examiners ruled the cause of death as self-inflicted hanging.
Ngin’s apartment was isolated within the complex, and his death remained unnoticed until the bank finally seized and sold his unit.


Missing Yucca Valley Woman Found In Car After Two Years
In 2013, Carla Ruth Reyes went missing. Her body, found in the back of her Mitsubishi Gallant, wasn’t discovered by hikers until 2015. Reyes, a 52-year-old woman from Yucca Valley, reportedly left her cell phone at home before driving to an isolated part of California’s Highway 62.
Her surviving family believes she took her own life, and medical examiners determined no foul play was involved.


Joyce Carol Vincent’s Body Was On A Sofa For Over Two Years
In 2006, during the repossession of a home, London police found the body of 38-year-old Joyce Carol Vincent. Medical examiners determined she had died over two years earlier. She was found on her couch, with the television tuned to BBC1 and a small pile of unopened Christmas presents on the floor.
Authorities identified Vincent from her dental records and concluded her death was due to natural causes. Her story inspired a 2011 docudrama titled “Dreams of a Life.”


Child Found Dead After Two Years in House
In 2013, Bradford police, investigating reports of possible child endangerment, discovered the body of 4-year-old Hamzah Khan in his crib. Hamzah had died almost two years earlier from malnourishment. His mother, Amanda Hutton, stood trial for manslaughter, with investigators determining severe neglect.
Hutton’s surviving five children also showed signs of mistreatment. The Bradford Crown Court found Hutton guilty and sentenced her to 15 years in prison.


Missing Canadian Skier Found 35 Years Later
In 2015, authorities identified the body of Canadian skier Gregory Barnes, who had been missing for 35 years. Barnes’s family last saw him before he left to ski the Italian-Swiss Alps in 1980. According to the Italian Police, warmer than usual temperatures melted a substantial amount of ice, revealing his body.
Barnes, an avid outdoorsman, was determined to have died in an accident.


Michigan Woman Found Five Years After Her Death
In 2014, two repairmen found the body of Pia Farrenkopf on the property of her Michigan home, seated in the driver’s seat of her car. Investigators determined she had died in 2009. Farrenkopf frequently traveled for business, so her family didn’t find her absence unusual. Reportedly, it took years for her bank account to deplete because automatic payments covered her mortgage and bills.
When the funds ran out, the bank foreclosed on the home. Medical examiners couldn’t determine the cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition.


300-Year-Old Hidden Body Found in Bishop’s Tomb
In 2015, researchers scanning a 17th-century tomb discovered the body of a premature baby buried alongside the deceased Bishop Peder Winstrup. Bishop Winstrup, who died in 1679, is interred in a cathedral in Lund, Sweden. He was a prominent figure in Lund and once served as Denmark’s royal chaplain.
The well-preserved bodies of Winstrup and the 5 to 6-month-old fetus were found together. Examiners speculate the baby died due to a miscarriage or stillbirth. Researchers are conducting DNA tests to determine if there’s a familial link between the two, but they believe burial staff included the unbaptized baby to give it a Christian burial.


Child Missing For Two Decades Found In Mother’s Closet
In 1999, the NYPD arrested Madeyln Carmichael, 60, after receiving a tip about a missing 3-year-old Brooklyn girl. Authorities found Carmichael’s daughter, Latanisha, hidden in a closet, inside a footlocker. Carmichael attempted to mask the smell with incense and air fresheners. Neighbors alleged Carmichael claimed she sent Latanisha “to live down south.”
Investigators found the body wrapped in newspaper from 1979, indicating the girl had been missing for two decades. Carmichael, with no prior criminal record, was sentenced by Brooklyn courts, along with her middle-aged son, for tampering with evidence.


Teen’s Remains Found In Trunk Of Mother’s Car After 11 Years
In 2015, a Virginia State Trooper pulled over Tonya Slaton for a routine car search and found a black plastic bag containing the remains of her son, Quincy Jamar Davis, in the trunk. Slaton pleaded guilty to killing the teen 11 years earlier.
Hampton courts sentenced her to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.


Man Missing For 23 Years Found In Lake
In 2015, a fisherman on Hillsdale Lake accidentally unearthed a 1981 Chevrolet Citation that belonged to Fremont O’Berg of Paola, Kansas. O’Berg, aged 57, was reported missing by his family in 1992. Tim Leeper, who found the car using sonar, contacted police when he saw human remains inside.
Reportedly, O’Berg suffered from heart and liver conditions. Medical examiners could not determine the cause of death, and foul play is not suspected.


Croatian Woman Found After 35 Years
In Zagreb, Croatia, intruders stumbled upon the body of Hedviga Golik in her small loft apartment. Neighbors allege they last saw Golik in 1966, when she would have been around 42 years old. Medical examiners determined she likely died around 1973, and her body remained undiscovered for approximately 35 years.
Authorities found her sitting in front of the television, with a dusty cup of tea on the table beside her. Reportedly, Golik’s neighbors, who had been covering her rent and utilities, requested authorities check on her back in 1991. The coroner’s report indicated she died of natural causes.


Teen Found in Chimney
In 2015, contractors found the body of 18-year-old Joshua Vernon Maddox, who had been reported missing by his family in 2008. The remains were discovered when the contractors tore down an abandoned cabin located in Woodland Park, close to the teen’s Colorado home. There were no signs of trauma, and investigators found Maddox’s possessions nearby.
The coroner ruled the death an accident, suggesting Maddox had climbed into the chimney on his own before becoming stuck.


Man Found Buried In Front Yard
Diane Darling, who passed away in 2010, never reported her husband, Charles “Chuck” Woodburn, as missing. Woodburn, aged 51, disappeared in 2002. Following Darling’s death, family members came forward to file a missing person report. Maine State Police found Woodburn’s remains in the front yard of the home he shared with Darling.
Despite suspicious circumstances surrounding Woodburn’s death, authorities never charged anyone with his murder.


Woman Starves In Broken Elevator
A woman’s body was discovered in an elevator in Xi’an, China, where she had apparently starved to death. Workers found her body when they returned to the building after the Chinese New Year, more than a month after she became trapped. They were supposed to have checked the elevators before taking them out of service for the holiday, but authorities found they neglected to perform a visual inspection.
When they found her, they noticed that her hands were mangled from repeated attempts to escape.


Woman’s Remains Sat In Walmart Parking Lot For Months
Twenty-two-year-old Lauren Moss was first reported missing in November 2015, but she wasn’t found until the following February. Her body remained in her parked car in the Walmart parking lot in Salinas, California for months. Police suspected she took her own life, and surveillance cameras showed the car had been there since December.
Moss was finally discovered when employees peered inside the tinted windows.


Man Found Between Elevator And Shaft Wall In NYC
In July 2014, 20-year-old Tito Morales was discovered between the 18th and 19th floors of the building he was living in, located in the Bronx. Police aren’t certain how he ended up there, but pronounced him deceased after retrieving him.
It remains unknown whether foul play was involved.


Canadian Tourist Found Floating In Water Tank Of Downtown LA Hotel
Canadian tourist and University of British Columbia student Elisa Lam was discovered floating in one of four water cisterns atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Lam was not found immediately; she had been decomposing in the tank, which provided water for bathing and drinking to the hotel residents, for as many as 19 days.
Guests at the budget hotel had complained about low water pressure and an odd taste to the tap water, but it took over two weeks before anyone from the building’s maintenance staff investigated the cause of the issues.


Woman Found Passed In Her Cubicle
When Rebecca Wells, an auditor for the Department of Internal Services, was discovered deceased at her cubicle in an office building, it wasn’t because her co-workers noticed her and immediately called paramedics. She had already been deceased for over 24 hours when found, hunched over at her desk.
Although she typically worked in East Los Angeles, she was conducting an audit in the Downey area at the time. Her body went unnoticed for a day; she was working on the second floor of the office building in a row of cubicles where no other workers were stationed. She was found by a security guard on Saturday, February 12, 2011, and was last seen alive the previous day at 5 p.m. after a staff meeting.


Perished Man Found Inside Car
According to neighborhood parking enforcement officials, the issue wouldn’t have been flagged in the system until a full week after the seventh ticket was placed on the man’s car, had he not been discovered deceased instead of sleeping.
John Waldo was reported missing nearly two weeks before the first ticket was issued, and toxicology reports to determine Waldo’s cause of death will take a month and a half to process.


Stalker Found Outside Paula Abdul’s House
Her name was Paula Goodspeed. At 30, she was found deceased in a car outside former American Idol judge Paula Abdul’s house in Sherman Oaks, around the 3800 block of Beverly Ridge Drive.
Police investigated her death with the possibility Goodspeed ended her own life. Goodspeed had auditioned for one of Idol’s earlier seasons but didn’t make it past the first round of recruitment. She sang “Proud Mary” and wore a pink frock that caused fellow Idol Judge Simon Cowell to comment that Goodspeed looked like Abdul.
Anonymous police officials from the Los Angeles Police Department’s threat management unit mentioned they were familiar with Goodspeed due to her involvement in several stalking incidents, and this one happened to be more final. Officials declined to comment further.


Woman Died In Club After Lil Kim’s Birthday Party
Ingrid Rivera’s body was discovered in a utility closet after one of rapper Lil Kim’s birthday parties at Spotlight Live, a popular karaoke club. She was 24 years old.
Spotlight Live closed its doors for weeks after the incident to clean up the utility closet and investigate what happened. Rivera was reported missing by her mother on Tuesday, and Lil Kim didn’t hear about the body until Wednesday.
According to club patrons, Rivera was thrown out of the club by the reportedly heavy-handed security after being found drunk in the men’s bathroom. She wasn’t seen after the incident until someone discovered her in a closet.
An employee of the club was later charged with her murder.


Person Found In Elevator Shaft Frozen In Ice
According to multiple reports, it took three calls to Detroit authorities and over two days before they recovered the body of a man frozen in ice in the elevator shaft of a vacant warehouse.
A Detroit News reporter, following an anonymous tip, found the body, which was eventually removed from the ground with a saw.
Investigators estimate the body had been frozen in the ground for months, but there is no indication of how the man became trapped in the elevator shaft. It remains a mystery. The cause of death is also under investigation, with no leads at the time.


Real Corpse Found On Set Of CSI New York
While filming an episode of CSI: New York in Los Angeles, a set meant to represent Downtown New York was actually in Downtown LA. Coincidentally, criminals in LA decided to leave a mummified corpse right where the cast and crew were filming. The body was the mummified remains of a man found on the fifth floor of the building where CSI: New York was being filmed.
According to the manager, the tenant “was discovered by a building engineer who checked on the tenant because he had not paid rent for the month.”


Women Found In Suitcases
The body of Betty Williams, 28, was discovered in a suitcase in East Harlem, New York City, near Rao’s restaurant. Surveillance footage captured an unidentified man carrying the suitcase and nonchalantly dropping it off.
This wasn’t the first incident of a body found in a suitcase near Rao’s; nearly a year earlier, another victim was found in a nearby area. Police investigators suspect mafia involvement. Jody White, an innocent bystander who found the suitcase, commented, “I was just walking by and came across it.” Autopsy results revealed that Williams was strangled.


Man Found Inside Crocodile
Wildlife rangers harpooned a crocodile and discovered a human head, a torso, and several appendages inside its stomach. The man’s legs were found farther upstream.
Police stated that the man was attacked the previous night by a crocodile while he slept on the river banks.


Discovered On The Set Of ‘The Six-Million Dollar Man’
Elmer McCurdy was an ordinary outlaw whose notoriety came long after his demise. In 1911, McCurdy met his end at the hands of the police after robbing a train of $46 and two jugs of whiskey. Unclaimed at the mortuary, McCurdy’s body was preserved with arsenic by the undertaker, who then charged visitors to view it.
This macabre display continued for several years until a man arrived at the mortuary claiming to be McCurdy’s brother. Taken at his word, the mortician allowed the stranger to take McCurdy. However, it was later revealed that the man was not related to McCurdy; he was a carnival worker who saw an opportunity. McCurdy’s corpse became a featured attraction in the man’s traveling show, dubbed the “Oklahoma Outlaw.” As McCurdy was sold to various carnivals over the years, his true identity was lost, and people began to perceive him as nothing more than a prop.
In 1976, 65 years after his demise, a production crew for The Six Million Dollar Man stumbled upon McCurdy’s corpse at The Pike, an amusement park in Long Beach, CA. Mistaken for a mannequin, McCurdy’s arm broke off, revealing bone and tissue beneath. Police were called, and through investigation, McCurdy was identified. He was finally laid to rest in Guthrie, OK, on April 22, 1977, marking the end of his bizarre journey.


Found Inside Disneyland Paris’s Haunted House
The Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris is their version of the popular Haunted Mansion attraction. The ride’s fictional narrative tells the story of a previous inhabitant who was visited by a phantom and subsequently passed, haunting the house. It’s a spooky tale for kids visiting Disney’s European outpost, but in April 2016, the haunted house got even creepier.
Employees discovered an actual body in the Phantom Manor. The deceased was a fellow employee who had worked at Disneyland Paris for 14 years. The 45-year-old was electrocuted while fixing a faulty piece of lighting behind the scenes.


Ghost Hunters Found A Woman’s Body In An Abandoned Hospital
In June of 2015, ghost hunters visited the Kuhn Memorial State Hospital in Vicksburg, MS, believing it to be haunted. However, what they found was far more disturbing than any ghost sighting. They discovered the body of a woman outside the hospital, with a bloody trail leading to the entrance.
The victim was identified as 69-year-old Sharon Wilson, who had been reported missing. Two suspects were later arrested for the crime after they were found driving Wilson’s car.


A Man Was Found In A Homemade Coffin Beside His Mother’s Remains
In May 2017, neighbors in Laredo, TX, grew concerned about Gabriel Martinez, a septuagenarian who hadn’t been seen outside for a while. Martinez lived with his mother, who hadn’t been seen for years. The lights were always on, and the grass around his property was overgrown. Worried residents called the police for a welfare check, and what they found was unsettling.
Martinez’s body was discovered inside the home, placed in a homemade wooden coffin. Even more disturbing, there were remains of another body in the coffin, believed to be Martinez’s mother.


A Man’s Body Was Found In A Hospital Ceiling
In October 2017, a 61-year-old man vanished after undergoing abdominal surgery at a hospital in Stellenbosch, South Africa. According to a nurse, she left the room briefly to get some bed linens, and upon her return, the man was gone. Nearly two weeks later, his body was found in the ceiling of the hospital.
It remains unclear how or why the man ended up in the ceiling. The hospital was undergoing construction at the time of his disappearance, which complicated the search for the patient, according to a hospital spokesman.


A Man’s Body Was Discovered In A Fishing Net
In December 2016, fishermen in Cape Cod, MA, made a shocking discovery in their nets: a human body among their catch. They brought the body to Provincetown and contacted the local police, who identified the deceased as Robert Carnevale of Rhode Island. Carnevale, who suffered from lymphoma, had chosen to be buried at sea.
While cremation is more common for burials at sea, Carnevale preferred to be interred in one piece. It is unknown what Carnevale’s family decided to do with his body after it was found by the fishermen.


A Woman’s Body Was Found In Walmart Bathroom
In 2017, surveillance cameras captured 29-year-old Katherine Caraway entering Walmart in Sand Springs, OK, on Friday, June 23, but she was never seen leaving. It wasn’t until the following Monday when store employees discovered Caraway’s body in a locked bathroom stall with an out-of-order sign on the door.
An employee recalled finding the bathroom stall locked on Friday evening but assumed it was out of order and placed the sign on the door. Autopsy results revealed that Caraway’s death was accidental, ruling out foul play. Medical examiners determined she died from difluoroethane toxicity caused by “huffing” air duster, which investigators found in her car.


A Missing Woman’s Body Was Found In A Church
Thirty minutes after her family reported her missing, the body of 70-year-old Carolyn New was discovered by a pastor at the church she attended in Somerset, KY. New regularly cleaned the church on Thursdays, and in August 2017, someone took her life while she was there. Surveillance footage showed a man, Dwight Bell, taking New’s car, which was later found abandoned in a parking lot in Indiana.
Police issued a warrant for Bell’s arrest, and the suspect was captured a month later in Knoxville, TN. During a news conference after Bell’s arrest, police revealed that he confessed to ending New’s life, although his motive remains unclear.


A Woman’s Body Was Found In A Cardboard Box In A Shopping Cart
In August 2017, two men in the Bronx were scavenging for recyclables when they stumbled upon a shopping cart. Upon inspecting it, they found a decomposing corpse hidden inside a cardboard box. They promptly reported their discovery to the police, who identified the victim as Nivela Hassan, aged 27.
Hassan’s body had been concealed in a cardboard box and placed inside the shopping cart. Surveillance footage revealed Darryl Orr wheeling the cart in the street. Orr was apprehended, and he confessed to having met Hassan and used drugs together in his apartment, where Hassan later passed away. Orr then placed Hassan’s body in the box and pushed it three blocks away from his apartment in the cart. Orr faced charges of concealing a human corpse and drug possession.
