Deep within the redwood forests of the Mendocino coastline lies a biking experience like no other.
It’s not your typical leisurely ride, but rather a fascinating adventure on a rail bike, a pedal-powered locomotive that glides along the historic Western railroad track in Fort Bragg.
This extraordinary ride promises an immersive and unique perspective of the lush green landscapes, almost as if you’ve been transported to a picturesque corner of Ireland.

Guiding us through this extraordinary journey is none other than Rick Hinman, a knowledgeable rail bike guide who introduces us to the rich history of the track.
This particular rail bike track has a fascinating pastāit once belonged to the renowned “skunk train,” a logging train turned passenger operation dating back to the early 1900s.
The quirky name “skunk train” was derived from the smoky exhaust that used to billow from the locomotive.
But fear not, the modern rail bikes have come a long way from those smoke-spewing ancestors.
Nowadays, rail bikes have been upgraded to electric power.
This allows riders to peacefully cruise through the redwood forest, fully immersed in the surrounding beauty without any noise or disturbance.
For those who fancy a break from pedaling, the electric bikes even come equipped with a throttleāa nifty feature to savor the journey at a leisurely pace.

As you meander through the forest, you’ll be captivated by the vibrant greenery and the delicate horse tail ferns gracefully adorning the sides.
It’s a sight that leaves you spellbound as your journey continues above the pristine Noyo River estuary.
This beautiful estuary teeming with life is a testament to the enduring resilience of the redwood forest, despite facing centuries of human-caused destruction.
Along the way, the rail bikes pass through intriguing formations known as “goose pens.”
These are hollowed-out redwood trees.
These peculiar trees, with their fire-resistant bark but combustible inner wood, were naturally hollowed out by fires that struck when the bark was damaged.
These awe-inspiring natural creations serve as a reminder of the forest’s history and its remarkable ability to withstand the odds.

The ride doesn’t stop thereācrossing two different trussell bridges, you’ll eventually reach Glen Blair Junction, where the track culminates at a tunnel.
This railroad, completed in 1911, once spanned 40 miles and terminated in Willets.
Sadly, the tunnel, fondly referred to as “tunnel number one,” was ultimately taken out by a landslide, bringing an end to the line’s journey.
The entire rail bike ride spans a seven-mile round trip, offering ample opportunities to soak in the sights and capture cherished moments.
As the journey reaches its turning point, Rick expertly maneuvers the rail bikes for a second pass, granting you the chance to snap more photos on your way back.
And here’s the cherry on topāthere’s no need to worry about steering.
You can comfortably snap pics and enjoy the scenery!
