James Corden admittedly “didn’t see it coming” when he was overcome with emotion during his special edition with Paul McCartney and carpool karaoke. He wiped tears from his eyes as he and Paul drove around Liverpool, England singing and enjoying each other’s company.

“Your music is so full of positivity, and joy, and a message of love and togetherness. I feel like it’s more relevant now today than it’s maybe ever been.” says Corden, host of “The Late Late Show.” Although he’d done dozens of other karaoke segments before, nothing prepared him for the soul-touching moment that was just ahead.

Former Beatle, Paul McCartney agreed, and he revealed the roots and history of the song, “Let It Be.”

“I had a dream in the ’60s where my mom, who died, came to me in the dream and was reassuring me, saying, ‘It’s going to be OK, just let it be.’ And I felt sort of great and just, ‘Boy, it’s going to be great!’ She gave me the positive word, so I woke up and went, ‘What was that, that she said? Let it be? I’ve never heard that, but it’s kind of good.’ So I wrote ‘Let It Be,’ but it was all about positivity.”

Paul’s mother’s who came to him in the dream was named Mary, and he included her name in the song’s lyrics.

“When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom

“Let it be.”

At the finish of the revelation, Corden declared that the story was “the most beautiful story I’ve ever heard.” The two of them burst into song, and McCartney cued Corden to take the harmony. Their voices blend together in unison, and it is difficult to watch the entire song without being overcome with emotion. There’s nothing “karaoke” about this Paul McCartney karaoke.

As Corden wiped away the tears brought on by such a tender moment, he admitted that he didn’t see it coming. McCartney responded that “the power of music” will bring out emotions you didn’t even see coming.

Corden nostalgically recalls how his dad and his grandad set him down and told him that they were going to play for him the best song he’d ever heard. That’s when he remembers hearing “Let It Be.” As Corden reminisces, he reveals that he wished his grandad was there and McCartney simply replies,

”He is.”

Let It Be ended up being the title to the album released in May 1970. Just a week after the episode aired, “Let It Be” is at the top of the charts once again. It hit number 30 on Australian iTunes charts on June 25th.

Positivity, joy, and a message of love and togetherness most definitely are just as relevant today as it was in 1970. You can view the incredibly emotional moment for yourself, but you better grab a hanky first. You might not see it coming.
