After the horrible shooting incident in a school in Parkland, Florida, many security measures were taken. However, one of those measures is very unpopular with its students, especially for female teens.
All students are now forced to use the same clear backpacks.
Many students at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School call it “an illusion of security.” The school council decided to make these transparent backpacks mandatory to increase security, but students were furious because they had to give up their privacy.
For female students, one of the more sensitive consequences of this action is the fact that they have to store their hygiene necessities such as tampons and menstrual items in plain sight. The teenagers felt that their freedom was completely taken away from them and that their high school started resembling a jail.
Luckily, a lot of students shared the same concern – and they all came together to protest to this measure in a rather funny, and ‘trolling’ manner.
After the students received their backpacks, they started filling them up with all sorts of ’embarrassing’ stuff such as tampons and other hygiene items. In addition, plenty of them decorated their transparent satchel with strong or hilarious quotes, funny pictures from the internet such as memes, and much more.
Some of these backpacks are making a statement, while others put a smile on people’s faces. For example, one person filled his backpack with tons of colored bath ducks, accompanied by the quote “This is ducking stupid.” There are also plenty of word puns to be found, such as “Clearly, this is ridiculous.”
Another well-thought quote was shared by a fellow student, who shared a caption of her completely empty backpack with the text “This bag contains everything politicians care about besides money.” These are just a few of the examples of messages written on the backpacks by students.
Some were even very intuitive and were able to fit their regular backpack into the clear backpack.
Either way – it’s a clear sign from these students that they feel their privacy shouldn’t be taken away from them.
“Starting off the last quarter of senior year right, with a good ol’ violation of privacy!” student Delaney Tarr tweeted.
Cameron Kasky decided to support his fellow students and filled his backpack with dozens of tampons. It’s a funny sight to behold, and Cameron’s backpack and tweet went viral.
“To those with questions about my tampon backpack – I only got lights. I didn’t know. Getting supers for tomorrow,” he posted. “Sizes, pricing… I’m learning new things about women’s health right now. This stuff is expensive. Steps must be taken to make these health products easier to access.”
The clear backpack situation has definitely created a debate amongst students. 16-year-old Rachel Padnis thinks that the clear backpacks aren’t that bad of a measure, but she thinks a metal detector would be more effective and less intrusive because people can still hide weapons inside lunchboxes, for example.
“Personally, I think that clear backpacks aren’t that big of a hassle. If it even makes one person at my school feel safer, I am willing to make that sacrifice,” the sophomore student said to Bored Panda.
“It’s actually pretty funny to walk through the hallways and see all the jokes everyone has written on them,” she added. “Although there are a whole bunch of complaints about them and I am feeling like my privacy has been taken away, I think they have brought a lot of real laughter back to my school which was missing for a while.”
Pidna then further explains her criticism and remarks about this new security measure.
“I see many students with lunchboxes in their backpacks that go unchecked as well as zipper pouches which seems to defeat the intended purpose and the police presence has gone down significantly. I feel like metal detectors or some kind of detector wand would be much more beneficial, but there’s also the fact that it would take a really long time for everyone to get scanned upon their entry to my school since there are about 3,200 students who go here.”
