Children’s birthdays can be fun, wild, and rewarding – and sometimes they can be stressful. Every parent wants his or her child to have the perfect birthday – to have fun with friends, to love every present opened, and to make memories that will last a lifetime. These parents gave their son the most epic birthday present ever: you’ll just have to see it to believe it.
Sarah and Steve are an adorable couple who love to make the most out of what they have. Sarah is a self-described maker of all crafts. She makes everything from quilts to scrapbooks to wall decorations. If it can be crafted, Sarah has had a part in it.
Sarah’s son loves to help her with her projects. Even as a toddler he liked to join his mom in crafting various items around the house. His creativity shined out from an early age.
When their son was two years old, Sarah and Steve bought a house in California. Shortly after moving into their new home, the couple discovered something incredible: there was a tiny door behind their son’s dresser! The two knew that this was the beginning of their next project.
The door was four feet tall, and what was behind it was even more amazing. There was an entire little room the couple had never seen before! It was dingy, with outdated wood panels and exposed insulation, but the space was full of potential.
Sarah and Steve came up with the perfect plan for the space. Since it was tiny and had a pitched roof, they knew they would not be able to find an adult use for the room. Instead, they turned it into an amazing surprise for their son. His fourth birthday present was a secret room!
The parents pushed the dresser back in front of the door, never telling their son about it. For two years, they worked on the room in secret while their son was at school.
After finishing the hard work of drywalling, laminating the floor, and adding the molding, Sarah and Steve were ready for the fun part of their project. They painted the wall bright blue, a color they knew their son would like.
The couple headed off to Ikea to find furniture for their son’s “Treasure Room.” They found a desk that was perfect for reading, writing, and crafting.
Next, they decorated the wall with a giant map of the earth as inspiration for their young traveler.
Some blankets and a toy chest completed the space. The room looked like something out of a television show! Sarah and Steve’s son is sure to have fun playing in his own secret room.
All parents want to give their children birthday celebrations that they will remember forever. That is exactly what this couple accomplished through hard work and ingenuity.
Now their son shares the room with his baby sister. He welcomes her into his secret “Treasure Room” by reading her stories and playing with her. What a loving family.
