Hollywood is a competitive place. Some actors are expected to be the next big thing, but they didn’t end up living up to the hype. Here are the 20 actors that Tinsel Town didn’t end up shining so brightly on.
Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner rose to fame in 2008 for his role as Jacob Black in the Twilight Saga series. He quickly gained a large fan following. However, after the Twilight Saga, his popularity declined and he was no longer receiving the same level of attention on screen.
Shailene Woodley
In 2011, Shailene Woodley starred in the movie called The Descendants. She received positive reviews from critics and won many awards for her acting.
Nylon magazine even named her one of the 55 future stars in their “Young Hollywood Issue.” After her success in The Descendants, she was cast in the Divergent series.
However, the third movie, Allegiant, didn’t do well at the box office, so the studio decided to finish the series on TV. Shailene Woodley wasn’t comfortable with this change and decided not to be a part of the TV show. However, she then surprisingly accepted a role in HBO’s Big Little Lies.
Carrie-Anne Moss
Carrie-Anne Moss became a famous Hollywood star when she played Trinity in the exciting sci-fi movie The Matrix (1999). The film was a huge success, earning a massive $460 million worldwide and receiving praise from critics.
Before The Matrix, Moss didn’t have much of an acting career. However, her role as Trinity in The Matrix Trilogy catapulted her to international fame and became the most memorable part of her acting journey. Nowadays, she often appears in various Marvel shows on Netflix, with her latest role being in Jessica Jones.
Mischa Barton
The popular Fox TV series, The O.C., quickly gained popularity, and Mischa Barton’s portrayal of Marissa Cooper made her even more famous. The British-American actress received several Teen Choice Awards for her performance.
However, after the show’s third season finale in May 2006, Mischa decided to leave. During her time on The O.C., she was recognized as the “Next Big Thing” by Glamour magazine and hailed as the “It Girl” of 2003 by Entertainment Weekly.
Unfortunately, after leaving the show at its peak, Mischa has been in the public eye for legal issues and impulsive actions.
Taylor Kitsch
Taylor Kitsch became well-known in 2006 when he portrayed Tim Riggins in the NBC sports drama TV series called Friday Night Lights. He appeared on the show for five seasons and gained international recognition from critics and millions of viewers.
Kitsch was also chosen to play the popular character Gambit in the X-Men spinoff movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Despite appearing in notable films like John Carter, Battleship, True Detective, and Savages, it seems that Taylor Kitsch didn’t achieve the same level of stardom as Johnny Depp.
Megan Fox
Megan Fox became well-known for her role in the TV sitcom Hope & Faith. In 2004, she made her first film appearance in the teen comedy Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and gained widespread recognition with her breakout performance in the popular action film Transformers in 2007.
She also appeared in the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, Megan Fox was not included in the later Transformers movies after the second one.
Minnie Driver
Minnie Driver gained recognition in 1997 when she received an Academy Award nomination for her role in the movie ‘Good Will Hunting’.
She also won an Emmy award and a Golden Globe award for her work in the TV series ‘The Riches’. The English-American actress has appeared in numerous films and had a notable role as Fiona Bowa in the NBC sitcom ‘About a Boy’. Despite the acclaim she received for her performance in ‘Good Will Hunting’, Minnie Driver did not become a widely recognized name in Hollywood.
Currently, she stars in the TV show ‘Speechless’.
Armie Hammer
Armie Hammer rose to fame after his role in the film ‘The Social Network’ and is most recognized for playing leading characters in movies like ‘The Lone Ranger’, ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’, and ‘Mine’.
He received a SAG award nomination for his performance in the biographical movie ‘J. Edgar’ and garnered critical acclaim and multiple nominations for his role in ‘Call Me by Your Name’.
Despite his attractive appearance and charisma, Armie Hammer seemed to excel more in supporting roles rather than as a prominent lead actor in films.
Brandon Routh
Brandon Routh had a strong desire to become an actor and started landing roles in various TV series, including ‘Gilmore Girls’, in the early 2000s.
He gained regular appearances in the NBC series ‘Chuck’ and took on supporting roles in films like ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’. In 2006, Routh achieved a significant breakthrough by being cast as “The Man of Steel” in Bryan Singer’s movie ‘Superman Returns’.
There were high expectations for him as he stepped into the iconic role previously played by Christopher Reeve. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t meet those expectations, and Brandon Routh has since taken on a lesser superhero role in the TV series ‘Legends of Tomorrow’.
Leelee Sobieski
Leelee Sobieski was once in the running for the role of Claudia in the movie ‘Interview with the Vampire’, but Kirsten Dunst was ultimately chosen instead.
The American actress appeared in various films like ‘The Reunion’, ‘A Horse for Danny’, and ‘Jungle 2 Jungle’. In her mid-teens, she gained recognition and was considered a rising star after her performances in ‘Deep Impact’, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, and the TV show ‘Joan of Arc’.
However, despite early success, she struggled to maintain momentum and even received a Razzie Award nomination. Today, many people are unfamiliar with her.
Sam Worthington
Sam Worthington gained worldwide recognition after appearing in several minor roles in Hollywood films, including ‘The Great Raid’.
He even auditioned for the iconic role of James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’, but the part ultimately went to Daniel Craig. However, Worthington experienced a breakthrough in his Hollywood career when he was cast as the main protagonist in ‘Avatar’, which became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
He went on to star in a few more blockbuster films, playing the lead in ‘Clash of the Titans’ and ‘Terminator Salvation’. Despite these successes, Sam Worthington never became a consistent presence on the big screen.
Chad Michael Murray
In 2003, Chad Michael Murray became famous by playing the lead character Lucas Scott in the popular TV series ‘One Tree Hill’.
The show was a huge success and had the highest ratings in the history of the WB network. Murray received praise for his role in ‘One Tree Hill’ and even wrote a book series. He also had significant endorsement deals with companies like MasterCard, KMart, Cingular Wireless, and Chevy Cobalt.
However, despite his initial fame, Chad Michael Murray couldn’t sustain his celebrity status. As time passed, his teenage fan base grew up and lost interest, and he gradually faded from the spotlight, which is a common phenomenon for teen idols.
Dakota Fanning
Hannah Dakota Fanning became a well-known Hollywood star at the young age of seven when she portrayed Lucy Dawson in the movie ‘I am Sam’.
Her performance earned her a SAG award nomination at just eight years old, making her the youngest nominee ever. She also appeared in other notable films like ‘Uptown Girls’, ‘Man on Fire’, and ‘War of the Worlds’. Dakota Fanning showcased her exceptional talent at an age when most kids are still learning to read and write.
It’s uncertain whether the audience will embrace her in more grown-up roles, but her acting in The Alienist didn’t receive much praise.
Phoebe Cates
Phoebe Cates transitioned from modeling to acting and made her debut in the movie ‘Paradise’ in May 1981. She also showcased her singing talent by lending her voice to the main theme song of the film. Phoebe also appeared in a couple of ‘Gremlins’ movies. However, despite her early success, she gradually faded from the movie scene and eventually decided to retire from acting.
Emile Hirsch
Emile Hirsch made his first film appearance in 2002 in ‘The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys’ and followed it up with ‘The Emperor’s Club’ in the same year.
Two years later, he appeared in successful movies like ‘The Girl Next Door’, ‘Imaginary Heroes’, ‘Lords of Dogtown’, and ‘Alpha Dog’.
However, it was his breakout performance in ‘Into the Wild’ in 2007 that brought him critical acclaim and a Screen Actors Guild nomination for best actor. Emile Hirsch became popular and gained a reputation as a hipster icon in Hollywood.
He then took on the main role in ‘Speed Racer’ directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, which premiered in 2008. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t propel his career to new heights, and since then, he has mostly taken on minor roles in less high-profile projects.
Eric Bana
Before making it big in Hollywood, Australian-born Eric Bana gained recognition through the Australian sketch comedy series, Full Frontal.
His Hollywood career took off after his role in the war film ‘Black Hawk Down’ in 2001 and his lead role in ‘Hulk’ in 2003.
He went on to land significant roles in movies like ‘Troy’ in 2004, ‘Munich’ in 2005, ‘Star Trek’ in 2009, and ‘Deliver Us from Evil’ in 2013. Despite disappointments with ‘Hulk’ and ‘Troy’, where the movies didn’t meet expectations, critics were unsure about Eric Bana’s potential in high-profile films.
The Hulk character was even rebooted multiple times, but it wasn’t due to Bana’s performance. Since those setbacks, Bana has made memorable supporting appearances in movies like ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Hanna’, although he has the potential to be a prominent leading actor.
Garrett Hedlund
At 18 years old, Garrett Hedlund moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. He made his Hollywood debut in the movie ‘Troy’ as Patroclus. In 2007, he appeared in ‘Georgia Rule’ alongside Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda, and Felicity Huffman.
Unfortunately, the movie didn’t perform well at the box office and was considered a disappointment by critics, earning only $41 million. Hedlund gained success with his performance as the title character in ‘Tron: Legacy’.
However, he reportedly turned down the roles of Finnick in ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, which turned out to be blockbuster hits. In hindsight, it appeared to be a regrettable decision for Garrett Hedlund.
Jai Courtney
Jai Courtney began his acting career with a short film called “Boys Grammar” in 2005. He then appeared in the Australian series “Packed to the Rafters” in 2008.
He also had roles in the comedy film “To Hell & Bourke” and various short films. In Hollywood, Courtney has taken on multiple roles in big franchise movies. He played Eric, a leader in the Dauntless faction, in the film “Divergent” in 2014.
He has also been featured alongside Hollywood icons like Bruce Willis in “A Good Day to Die Hard,” Tom Cruise in “Jack Reacher,” and Will Smith in “Suicide Squad.” However, despite his appearances in these well-known films, many movie-goers wouldn’t recognize Jai Courtney by name, even though they might remember him as Captain Boomerang from “Suicide Squad.”
Gemma Arterton
Gemma Arterton, an English actress, achieved a major breakthrough when she was cast as Strawberry Fields, the love interest of Daniel Craig’s James Bond in the movie “Quantum of Solace” in 2008.
She also appeared in other big Hollywood films like “Clash of the Titans” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” in 2010, as well as “Byzantium” and “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” in 2013.
